Christmas market in the rural outskirts

moated Renaissance castle in Schönfeld

By third Advent weekend I'm usually tired of the big city Christmas markets and head to the smaller and less commercial markets. A very nice one is the market in Dresden-Schönfeld, located on a plateau above the Elbe river in the eastern outskirts of the city. Schönfeld still looks like a village, has a moated Renaissance castle and a parish church next door, some small local businesses like bakery, butcher, craftsmen, and a pub in the centre - perfect for a Christmas market that is organised by the local history society.

We easily found a spot to park the car in a side street and walked the few steps to the centre. The wooden stalls were set up around the moated castle.

There were about 20 stalls selling local artisans'/craftsmen's products and food/beverages. Specials were the freshly made Quarkbällchen (fried curd balls, sort of doughnuts) - they sold so fast, they never got cold, had to try some, of course - and the small tent with oriental tea and coffee specialties e.g. The kids from the local schools sang carols and sold their own handicraft works. Sweet! The stall I liked best, however, was the one where they sold "Fettbemmchen" - see picture with the sign "Muster - nicht essen" ("Sample - do not eat"). We had Glühwein and a horse meat sausage, both very tasty.

Inside the castle the Christmas market continued with more handicraft works and artisans' stands, a cafe where local Stollen, coffee, tea and Glühwein were offered.

Highlight here was the fantastic Whisky bar that put any bar in a posh hotel to shame. I loved the beautiful restored rooms of the Renaissance castle with painted wooden ceilings on the upper floors and vaulted rooms on the ground floor. The castle is known as home of magicians and we were right in time for a show - free on that occasion. Nice treat.

About 4 pm a procession led by Santa Claus on a horse-drawn carriage brought the Giant Stollen to the Christmas market. This Giant Stollen is a donation of local bakeries, the pieces were given away for (small) donations to non-profit/welfare/cultural organisations. A truly charming market. We needed to warm up a bit and took a break at Cafe Hübner, only a few steps away. Coffee and Stollen were yummy :-) After that we had a quick look into the beautiful parish church, then walked over the market once more, now beautifully lit up as it was getting dark.

We were not done yet for that day, though. Next on the schedule was an Advent concert in the parish church Dresden-Loschwitz, about 5 km away. They have a very active parish and their concerts are always top notch - quite many of the best musicians of Dresden live in that residential area and play in that church, too. We were not disappointed. The concert was a mix of instrumental pieces and sing-along carols. We enjoyed singing all the well-known traditional Christmas carols very much, among them "Macht hoch die Tür", "Adeste fideles" and "Tochter Zion", but also a Christmas song that was composed/written by two locals from neighbouring Dresden Wachwitz about a century ago. Of course we all headed to the Christmas market only about 100 m away and had some more Glühwein after the concert ... see 7th entry for more info on this lovely, romantic market.
