Christmas market in Dresden-Loschwitz in front of the historic timber-framed houses

The small, romantic Christmas market in Dresden-Loschwitz, one of the lovely 19th century residential districts in the eastern outskirts, is among my absolute favourites. It takes place at Friedrich-Wieck-Str. from Körnerplatz down toward the Elbe river and is organised by the non-profit association "Elbhangfest e.V." (They organise the big festival Elbhangfest in June, too, thus the name.)

This market has a special charm because of the setting along the hundreds of years old timber-framed houses with artisans' shops in this area. Another plus is that it is organised by this noon-profit association with strong roots in the neighbourhood, so seemingly everyone in the district seems to contribute.

Thus the market is less commercial, more artsy, and you find things you rarely find elsewhere on Christmas markets. The Glühwein is fantastic (organic, too), ditto Bratwurst from the local butcher, the hot chocolate and pralines from the nearby chocolaterie are to die for, bakery Wippler across the street has excellent Stollen and yummy Vanillekipfel plus a cosy cafe to warm up yourselves. A visit after sunset is highly recommended, that's when the scene becomes picture-perfect, the locals show up after work and chat relaxed over a cup of Glühwein.

When we visited we first had a look around the Christmas market. It was not very busy in early afternoon, so we could easily get to the stalls and check out what they offered. In one of the art shops we found some very nice Christmas cards that we bought and we also got a piece of pottery.

About an hour before sunset we headed to the nearby cable car station to enjoy the panoramic views of the city, buried under snow, from the top station. Wow, very beautiful! For the way down from the viewing platform to the upper cable car station we took the stairs and passed a nice temporary exhibit, related to the season. They had scenes with toys and figures/teddies set in Dresden during Christmas season. See pictures!

Back down we popped into Cafe Wippler first to warm up. We each had a piece of cake (chocolate cake for me - delicious!) and a coffee (latte macchiato for me - very tasty). After that we joined the locals on the market, walked from stall to stall and had another, closer look at the things they offered. We dropped into the shops of the artisans and craftsmen, and the art galleries in the historic timber-framed houses. In one of their courtyards - nicely decorated - was another Glühwein stall that we had to check out. So we ended up with one more delicious organic Glühwein and I also got me another few pieces of Quarkbällchen (sort of doughnuts). Yummy!

Right before we wanted to leave the live music that they have daily in early evening started. A brass band played Christmas carols which completely made the ambience magical, together with the lights, the Herrnhut stars, the lit up wooden angel above the stalls ...
