Chillin in Tallinn
August 15, 2007
Leaving Helsinki was EXTREMELY hard... I was almost tempted to just stay.
But I had arranged to meet Pete in Riga on Thursday and he was flying specially for it.
So i caught the ferry to Tallinn and it was a very pleasant journey.
Tallinn is a nice small city and the 'old town' is extremely beautiful, clean, interesting, architectural and well appointed.
I spent my days walking right through the alley ways and streets seeing a heap of churches, buildings, shops, cellars and the like. It's a very touristy town and certainly geared for a lot of tourists. The food is excellent and I always relish the opportunity to sample some good seafood. There was some very good restaurants around.
I climbed to the top of the highest cathedral (St Olav's Church) and got a heap of great shots. I also walked around the old fortress walls and up to a small hill to the Kohtu View Platform.
The night scene was totally different and unfortunately I feel it has been destroyed by English on stag nites and sleezy Italians. The clubs are terribly overcrowded by men who all stand around the dance floor oggling the few girls that are there. When they get drunk enough they start to harrass the girls. I think this has made the girls very much afraid of contact with guys and I actually got pushed in the face by a group of Russian girls when I walked up before I could even ask the simple question I was going to ask. In fact most of the Russians I met were extremely rude. I dont really know what their problem is. Once you actually get talking to people and they realise that you are not English and just being friendly things can change quite quickly and I did actually meet some people who understood this and it was quite pleasant.
I tried to talk to most people I came into contact with and found that in general their english was poor to non-comprehensible. This was also disappointing.
Overall it was a very nice city and certainly worth seeing for a few days. The people seem cold but can actually be friendly and its also important to understand the differences between the local Estonians and the Russians as they identify themselves very differently.

I checked into the Tallinn Backpackers and then checked out again about an hour later.
I wasnt happy with it at all.
It was a very dingy place with quite bad rooms.
The main dorm doubled as the common room, so if you wanted to sleep during the day you have no chance as all the hungover Brits sit there watching TV and playing cards.
The only good points I can think of:
1. The hostel is centrally located and the staff were very friendly.
2. The bathroom is quite exotic (it must have been a mansion previously) as the shower has a spa/jacuzzi.
3. They refunded my money when i chose to check out again.
There is also only one shower per floor and the toilet is also in the same room so you can find yourself waiting a long time to use either of them....
I dont recommend this place at all.

Café Olde Hansa is located just behind the main square (Raekoja Plats) in the centre of the old town in Tallinn.
Its obviously quite touristy and therefore a little more expensive but it’s definitely worth the visit!
It’s a very authentic feeling Ye Olde restaurant. Right down to the costumes of the buxom wench staff and the clay mugs they serve your beer in.
The food is excellent and has a huge menu to choose from including a massive feast involving a bear! Drinks are also great with plenty of good beers, ales and wines to choose from.
The interior and toilets are also appropriately detailed and it’s quite a feast for the eyes as well. This includes boarskins, everything is by candlelight. I really enjoyed my meal, the service was excellent, and it was a great setting.
