Coastal Reflections

This is the second visit to the far south city of Ushuaia.  Having visited some 10 years earlier with my dad on a trip through Argentina, we often spoke about returning to use it as the transitory port as many do for Antarctica.  Well, fast forward about a decade later and it finally became a reality.

During that first time, it was a relatively more quaint and quiet town. The downtown was more like a pocket of activity and some things, like the airport, seemed to be long removed. But fast forward 10 years and the town has greatly grown. There does not seem to by any 'new' part of town, because the homes and building have the same general appearance. I don't know how they can make a new home look like its been aged 50 years, but they have.

The airport is now almost connected by growth, the iconic wreck of SS Saint Christopher is now along the main boardwalk not 10 minutes walk out of town.

The town is changed, but at the same time, unchanged from our initial visit.  The town still has the same half dozen small museums, the Tren del Fin del Mundo and the Beagle Canal cruises are still the main draws, the city streets are still the same with tourist souvenir shops and restaurants.  But the town has sprawled outward, maybe not quite double its size, but noticeably larger.  And sadly I noticed two of the iconic signs of the “Ushuaia, end of the earth, beginning of everything” have been removed due to expansion of the roads and installation of a container port right at the center of town.  But the fresh air and views were still enjoyful, walking the streets proved to be a refreshing activity and worked up the appetite for a good meal (with questionable service) at Chiko’s.
