The calm before the storm

On a glass bottom water taxi

Today started out with overcast skies.  We welcomed the small change in temperature. After breakfast we headed to the marina.  It isn’t hard to find transportation to the arch. There are about 20 fishermen at any given time outbidding each other.  It was a slow day in the shipping tourists business. Little did we know this was due to the impending arrival of a tropical storm.

We paid $45 for the three of us in a glass bottom water taxi. The entry to the marina was another $1 per person.  We were fitted with live vests and had the boat all to ourselves. Like I said, it was a slow day.

The ride out of the marina didn’t take long. We passed by the “beach that the locals visit” to get to “pelican rock”.

On a glass bottom water taxi
Some genius named this place. It is a rock with a pelican sitting on it. I don’t know what they call it when the pelicans are off to get lunch or dinner. We stopped the boat here, and our captain fed the fish, so they would come to our boat. I had the ol’ underwater camera with me, so I stuck it under the surface and snapped away. Ben was already over the whole boat experience at this point. The fish flopping against the “glass bottom” window in the floor was the only thing that got him to squeeze out a little smile.  We kept on moving and the water was getting choppier. Next stop was the “pyramid rock” which does have a cool shape.  After this the other boats got really close to the rocks to let people look through the “window to the Pacific”.
We were told this is the beach the locals go to. We wanted to make it there, but the storm ended up ruining that plan.
One quick glance at the captain and he understood that it was unnecessary to get that close for us.  Ben already started to lose color in his face.  Thankfully we had made it to the Arch.  Ben cheered up since he recognized it from the screen saver that I had up at home prior to our departure to Mexico.  He said he wanted to get out to smash rocks into it. Hahaha Well, there is no longer a beach surrounding the arch, so getting out is impossible.  On a nearby flat rock surface we heard and saw the familiar sea lions. We have so many of those in Monterey that Ben just said “hi” in perfect sea lion manner, and then slumped back against me with a “I’m over this, let’s go” expression on his face.
The Arch of Cabo - one last look
The boat was on its way back to the marina, and the whole round trip took about 45 minutes all together.  When we reached the jetty Ben was the first one out of the boat. He did so unassisted, and did not turn around until he reached ground that wasn’t shaking. Poor kid. Well, first boat trip, survived.

Mom and dad had a quick cerveza at a bar, and we order a “grilled cheese” for him. Well, it turned out to be canned cheese on white bread. Yikes. No need to review this place as it didn’t survive the storm that would come by later in the day. We headed back to the hotel as the sky was growing darker, and the wind was picking up.

After Ben’s nap, we took a quick dip in the pool, and then got ready to head out for dinner and to grab some bottled water at the grocery store.

Cheeese
We went back to our favorite seafood place. (yes, yes, review to follow) While we were eating the first downpour started. We were lucky that it stopped long enough for us to walk back to our hotel. We still hadn’t picked up on the “pre tropical storm” vibes the locals were sending out. When we got back to our villa the outdoor fans had been removed. Looking outside over the balcony we saw some of the houses around us boarding up their windows. It must have been the heat, because I still didn’t catch on.

The night was long. The rain steadily grew harder and the wind would not let up. Our big panoramic doors were shaking and rattling the whole night.  How Ben slept through it, I will never know.  It wasn’t until the next morning that our weather apps finally admitted that there was indeed a tropical storm, Lidia, right above our heads.
