African food and weird park sculptures can only mean I'm back you-know-where!

Frieze Sculpture Exhibition 2017 at Regent's Park

We surprisingly landed on time. I'm never a fan of arriving in LHR T3 at the "peak hour" of 9am, but it was surprisingly quiet. I breezed through immigration, baggage reclaim and I  was on the H-EX to Central London by 1015am. I checked into the hostel (Earls Court YHA) and left my luggage in the basement (as per). One good thing I did was review both the current Timeout London and Lonely Planet editions for things I can do in London and found some to keep me busy.

First order of the day was heading to the Leicester Sq Box office to see what was on offer. I scored a 20 quid deal on "An American in Paris". So after that, I headed to Regent's Park. The last time I'd been here was easily 4-5 years ago.

I went to visit the Frieze Sculpture open Exhibition. After successful  showings in N England, they brought their esoteric exhibits to London. It was fairly hot, but sunny weather's amazing to admire these attractions in parks. I ran into a Kannada family as well whilst here.

The next stop was Peckham aka the African heart of London. I had wanted to visit this place for a bit now, but the reason was stronger this time as the South London Gallery had a great exhibit around the 80s -  a pivotal time for blacks in London when equality and rights increasing in their favour and their struggles coping with the new "status". I enjoyed the exhibit, although I will admit the weather was hot and the walk from the DLR to the Gallery wasn't fun. i spent about an hour here, including some time watching an interesting docu that's shown as a daughter sending a letter to her mum describing these changes.

I quite enjoyed it, very 'non-commercial' which also means a lot less PC than exhibits you'd find, say, in a British Museum.

I walked back to the main Peckham district and it was like a flashback to my early years in Zambia. So many african restaurants, clothes shops, so much. I stopped into a restaurant for a late lunch, and I was thrilled to see people eating with their hands! Brought back such good memories. I ordered a spicy black eyed peas curry.

From here, I took a rather long route on the bus to Brixton but had the pleasure of a gentleman who was telling me of all the books he's read, etc. On arrival at Brixton, I caught the tube to the Oxford Circus area, shopped at Berksha and then returned to the hostel.

Peckham Rye aka Little West Africa, I had food in this restaurant and it was quite good!
I checked in, unpacked and relaxed for a bit before heading out again - no bag, no nothing to the theatre.

I have to say, I'd have enjoyed "An American in Paris" a lot more had I not fallen asleep! I think the early rise and general travel fatigue was catching up. That said, it was enjoyable in the parts I saw, but certainly not the best I've been to. I can't wait to return to London in Oct and perhaps catch up on Lion King or Aladdin.  Plus, i'd forgotten how long these things go on - the play was over by 1020p so all I really did was catch the Tube and head straight home. The bonus though was I finally got to use the "modernised" Tottemham Court Rd Tube station and it really looks clean and spanky. And I loved the tile artwork on the walls.

All in all, I could sum this up as a typical day in London for me. A great mix of culture, fun, food and shopping. It's so DARN HARD to get bored in this town, there's always something going on!
