The belfry of St.Martin's Church

During the preparation of our Annual Virtual Tourist Meeting in 2017, Karthrin E, who had thought Lower Bavaria had many charms of its own, offered us a visit to Landshut as a part of the traditional after-meet program. About a dozen of participants signed up including me. We met at the railway station in Munich and traveled to Landshut using Bavaria Card, which was very convenient. A city bus took us to the city center then, and we started exploring this wonderful city.

The city dates back to 1204, when Ludwig I, the Duke of Bavaria, ordered the construction of the city to control the crossing of the Isar and the important trade routes to and from the east that passed through the area.

Landshut’s geographical location was perfect because of the island on the River Isar that enabled a fast construction of two smaller bridges. The city name originated from the German phrase "Hut und Schutz des Landes" meaning 'guard and protection of the state'. The fortress that was built here in early 13th century served that aim. Nowadays this city has around 70,000 inhabitants. Landshut is a well-known tourist destination in Europe. It makes an ideal base for day trips to other parts of southeastern Bavaria. We discovered many interesting sights in Landshut, among them:

1. Medieval city center (Mittelalterliche Altstadt). Landshut's historic city center is mostly preserved in the state it was 500 years ago. Today it is a pedestrian zone with a lot of shops and cafes. This place also serves as one of the stages for the quadrennial Landshut Wedding 1475 re-enactment.

The event commemorates the wedding of a son of one of the Dukes of Bavaria, George, to a Polish princess, Hedwig, in 1475. That wedding served an important political purpose of the European alliance against the Ottoman Empire in those days.  Website: www.landshuter-hochzeit.de .

2.  St. Martin’s Church (Martinskirche): the construction of the church began in 1385, and it took over 110 years until it was completed, around 1500. With an interior height of 29 m (95 ft) and a bell tower thatis 130 m (430 ft) high, Martinkirche is the tallest church in Bavaria and the tallest brick belfry in the world. In addition, it is one of the brilliant examples of Gothic architecture in Germany. St.Martin’s Church is number one landmark of Landshut.

3. Church of St. Judoc (Jodokskirche). This church is the second oldest church in the city , after Martinskirche. It was built between 1389 and the end of the 16th century in Gothic style. The church is famous for its 77 m (250 ft) high belfry.

4. We also saw Trausnitz Castle from downtown (Burg Trausnitz), but we had no time to pay a visit there. We would need to have a longer stay in Landshut to be able to visit that sight. This medieval castle is situated atop a hill overlooking the city of Landshut. The oldest parts of the castle date back to 1204. The castle served as the Wittelsbach ducal residence for Lower Bavaria.

St.Martin's Church
Trausnitz Castle survived many medieval wars. This castle, as they say, is surprisingly well preserved.  During the Landshut Weeding it serves as one of the venues for the re-enactment.

5. We visited the old city hall and its ceremonial hall with many murals dedicated to Landshut Weeding 1475. We were even invited to attend the quadrennial Landshut Wedding 1475 re-enactment in July 2017. This re-enactment  has taken place every four years since 1902. The large and impressive paintings that adorn the Town Hall's Ceremonial Room inspired the city leaders to organize the re-enectment that later became traditional. By the way, Landshut is the site of Europe's largest festival of the late Middle Ages, the Landshut Wedding. The Landshut Wedding re-enactment draws thousands and thousands of visitors for the duration of the costumed processions, events and concerts.

The magnificent Ceremonial Room of the Town Hall was used during the famous Landshut Weeding 1475 as the wedding dance room.  It was also an observation platform from where the participants could watch the knights' tournament held in the Old Town. In the 19th century, the town authorities commissioned Georg Hauberrisser, a famous German architect, to refurbish the room in the neo-Gothic style, which he managed to do with flying colours. Thus, the Town Hall became not also an administrative center, but also a cultural one.
