Just Popped in for a Quickie!
August 14, 2006
After an quick late lunch in the town of Moab, we headed north on US-191 and west on I-70. The drive was uneventful except for when I had to back track about 12 miles to fill up my gas tank because I wasn't sure if the quarter tank of gas would get us to the next gas station. Driving about 180 miles on I-70 led us to I-15 which we took southbound. I don't remember much of the drive because I was too anxious to get to our next destination...Zion National Park near the southwestern corner of Utah.
Truth of the matter was I wasn't even sure we would make it before the park closed. From the I-15 we took exit 27 to get onto UT-17 then onto UT-9 (Zion Park Blvd) into the town of Springdale, just outside of the park. Fortunately, the road trip gods were on our side as we had about 2 hours to explore. We parked at the Ranger Station and took the Zion Canyon Shuttle which follows Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The shuttle service operates from April through October, the park's peak season. We decided to hike along the Virgin River in the Refrigerator Canyon area which gave us a great view of Angels Landing...a hike we would have attempted if we had more time. Oh well that just means I need to return to Zion.
