Charleston, South Carolina Here We Come...
August 4, 2006
Our original plan was to drive down Hwy 12 to Hatteras, take the ferry to Ocracoke Island, then take another ferry to North Carolina's mainland. But timing forced us to take another route to Charleston, South Carolina. So we decide to stay on major highways...more lanes...more direct routes...higher speed limit. We headed west on Hwy 64 then south on Interstate 95. After a long of day of driving we only got to Santee, South Carolina.

Wright Brothers National Memorial
August 4, 2006
Kill Devil Hills is home to the site where the Wright Brothers demonstrated the first successful airplane flight on December 17, 1903. Since my cousin and I were worn out by the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse climb, we opted to drive around the monument. With the National Parks Pass, we entered the grounds for FREE!!! I have visited the mermorial before and the exhibits are full of aviation history. There is a replica of the 1903 Flyer, a replica of the hangar in the original's location, markers to indicate the 1903 flight paths, and you can climb up Big Kill Devil Hill where the Wright Brothers performed their flight experiments. The top of Big Kill Devil Hill, provides a scenic 360 degree vantage point of Albemarle Sound and the Atlantic Ocean...it is a magnificent sight!
I'll post some pic when I find them!
