Rain in the rain forest
July 20, 2007
The Olympic National Forest is on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Most of it is inland, but a small portion is along the coast. In the park we camped in the Hoh Rain Forest. At the Hoh they receive an average of 140 inches to 167 inches of rain each year. That's 10 to 12 feet of rain. It only averages 3.5 inches a month in the summer, but due to our luck it rained 6 inches in two days...4 inches in one afternoon and a night. The first day when it didn't rain as much we got in a small hike to the Hall of Mosses. The second day we decided to hike to the coast. It started off nice but once we got to the ocean it started to rain...and didn't stop. By the end of the hike I was soaked. Then we got to camp and it continued to rain for the rest of the day. By night our tent couldn't hold back anymore water and we had to put our shade canopy over the tent to keep the tent from leaking. I learned that if you plan to camp in Washington you need a rain fly that goes all the way to the bottom of your tent. I guess the best way to get used to the rain is to camp in it.
