So we have arrived at the hotel and realised something was going on in Mexico city!!

After a careful look we realised it was Viva La Mexico, which is the celebration (once a year and we picked the weekend) of the independence of Mexico. It was madness but also amazing to be part of the crowd. The friday night was just partying and lots of music, but the saturday was spent getting ready when the president speaks to the Zocalo (city centre square) and shouts Viva La Mexico. There was the a firework display.........a little on the unsfae side, rather like Alpbach at new year, bangers, fireworks into the crowd, smoke everywhere, bt it was still amazing all being set off behind the Cathedral.

Sunday was a different story. We awoke and whilst getting ready I put the TV on. Seeing the Zocalo on TV with the largest amount of people and their army, I opened our balcony to see it was live. The Sunday is spent basically showing the people the army and its their day to shine, with aircraft and every regiment, it was something else but from our balcony we had the best view.

The whole weekend was amazing and we are so glad we happened to come on the weekend, believe me it was not planned. We managed to see lots of historic sites and the museums, and a bit of shopping to.

Off to Guadalajara now for some more city viewing before he flight back to Cancun to travel around There. (yes plans have changed due to money and flight situations....but we have decided to take a more active end to the trip)

We actually stayed in Hotel Juez which is just off Zocalo (check Lonely Planet!) It was stupidly cheap and had a balcony looking over Zocalo ad was on top of everything. Ceaper than the hostel in the centre!! enjoy!

What hostiles did you stay at while in Mexico? I was just in Mexico last week and I'm already itching to go back. I'd love some info :) Can't wait to see the rest of your pics.
