One of the first Gold Country towns we visited was Bear Valley. Located in Mariposa County it was originally called Haydenville, for the gold mining brothers . The post office opened in 1851. It went thru several name changes and in 1858 became Bear Valley.

At its peak the population was near 3,000 but today only about 125 call it home.

It is designated California Historical Landmark #331
