The Mosque in Kairouan
Our first excursion was a 2 day travel to the South. We saw the big mosque in Kairouan. After that we went to Gafsa for lunch, and on to El Hamma for a little Jeep-trip to 2 mountain oasis, Chebika and Tamerza. In Chebika we went to see the mountains where they dig up mineral stones, and a little oasis (the spring that made the oasis excist). After a horrible 25 minutes of climbing that is. In Tamerza we saw a pretty big waterfall.

Then on to Tozeur, where we visited a plantation (with dades, banana, olives, apples). We got a tour by cart, but i felt sorry for the little skinny horses that had to pull the carts through the heat. And the smell wasn't exactly like a rosegarden....After that we made a quick trip to the edge of Chott El Djerid, a saltlake, and then off to Gafsa for dinner and a short night sleep.
The biggest salt lake in Tunisia.

Next morning, 4.00 am. Not a joke. Breakfast at 4.30 am, drive off at 5.00 am. Everybody was sleeping in the bus again. We saw a sunset at about 7.00 am, so we stopped for a quick photoshoot. Then on again to Douz. Douz is the first city to border the Sahara desert. And that's the place we got to ride a camel :D Well dromedary. And it was awesome. The Sahara is beautiful. Hard to describe when all you can think of is sand...but it's amazing. Unfortunately our camera decided to quit at that time so i don't have many pictures of it :S, and we couldn't go back to get spare batteries.
Off the camel, in the bus again, going to Matmata, visiting a berberhouse. It was nice to see for once. After that to the pace where a Star Wars scene was shot. (I'll put pictures of it...and please tell me which Star Wars it is if you know because i don't recognize it....)
Then lunch and driiiiiving a long time to the colloseum of El Djem. Which was absolutely fantastic! And after spending an hour there we were brought back to Sousse.

Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope was filmed there first in the 70's. In the 2000, Star Wars - Episode I, The Phantom Menace was then filmed aswell. Yes, the sahara is beautiful. I was able to cross it in Morocco. Unfortunately, I had a panic attack bec I was running out of water. Allah y haounek, Arlene
