On the way to Meteora

This is a long weekend trip on the 1st of November 2016. Is our long weekend and I don't have to work, it means is travel time. I wished is everyday long weekend in Belgium, unfortunately long weekend doesn't happen much lately, most of our public holidays fall in the week.

Planning a short trip is not easy to find a destination where good weather and Greece looked like ideal in autumn as destinationI have been to Greece before, when searching this trip we prefered the mainland - in my mind is Meteora.  A good idea after all we never been there, that will be a nice trip. We book a flight to Thessaloniki and also book a car at the airport as we were plan to drive a little bit around. We cramped always our trip on a very short time (means we'd like to see much as we can) and hiring a car is the easiest way to see a lot

We flown to Thessaloniki it seems the closest way to Meteora and less crowded than Athens.

One of six monastery on top of the rock
We have an early flight from Brussels- only 2h45 fly, we arrived around 9 am in Thessaloniki, no checked bags. We head straight to terminal exit for shuttle to rental car office which is located three kilometers away. We rented a car from Goldcar Rental, they're the cheapest we've found, and we had experience with this company in Spain, they have new cars. It took a while when the shuttle came, I think we're waited for 30 minutes. There were other passengers going to the same office I can imagine if everyone is going to pick up the car this can take awhile.

When we got to the office they ran inside to be the first, is funny to see while we're at ease (why would we ran, we're on holiday). There were only two personnel inside, so we're waiting almost an hour.

I feel so small between those rocks
We wasted time by waiting, but we didn't mind. We're likely rewarded by patiently waited- the staff who help us with papers upgrade the car, we normally book a smaller one for 4 days, but he give us a bigger car in diesel engine a bit cheaper to refuel

After everything settled we hit the road direction Meteora. While searhing some nice thing to see on the way I came to this monastery in Panagia Soumela- is an hour drive from Thessaloniki we have a quick stopped. The monastery is free admission and open to public. Beautiful from the outside and inside, is not big but nice to see. Near the parking are souvenir stalls selling local food and products

We continue our drive, we arrive around 3 in the afternoon. We drove straight to our B&B which was located on the foot in Meteora. We have a very friendly host and good with English, while having internet inside we search some more informations around and restaurants, appeared to be much place to dine around, so is something not to worry later.

Looks easy, but I lost my counts on step
The time passed so quick was late already, we took the car and drove around. We want to visit a monastery, so driving around looking a monastery who still open. The first one we saw was already closed at 4pm. The second one is open till 5pm so we're just on time. Visiting monastery on top - consider the steps and steep, it takes a while to reach the top.

We arrived at Monastery of Rousanou at 4.30 pm, they closed at 5 o'clock so we only have 30 minute time to reach the top and to see inside. On the way up- kept us busy, the view is beautiful, thus we make some stops. We're not the last one who goes up, there were other people. There is normally admission fee of 3, but due to closing time we didn't have to pay.

The nun is closing the monastery
We have 10 minutes to see the interior - I find less pretty and there's some spots inside forbidden to photograph, but I managed to take a few shots without nun around lol.

I prefer the view outside there is a viewing platfrom, but the gate was closed. The nun is pulling the bell to let everyone they're closing down :-) not sure what it means. I took a photo of her while she is pulled the rope I didn't know that forbidden, the other nun only came to me after I took a few shots. I'm glad to see one monastery on our first day, hope to see one more the next day- there are six monastery in Meteora. However, is another day, we'll have a long drive but we're planning to see one more before we go.
