Luhansk region atlas

According to the official information, the length of the state border in Luhansk region is 776 km (482 miles). The region has the area of 26,700 sq.km (10,200 sq.miles) and the population of about 2.5 million inhabitants. Luhansk region was formed on the basis of the huge Donetsk region on June 3,1938. We celebrate the Day of Luhansk region on the first weekend of June. The region is divided into 18 districts. Besides, there are 37 cities, 109 city-status towns called settlements here and 792 villages.

The territory of the region is rich in black soil that comprises about 80% of its area. Besides, we only have 8% of the total area where pine-trees and mixed forests grow. Among the most widespread trees are: oak, ash, maple, pear and apple, alder, poplar, willow and birch. There is Luhansk Natural Reserve (about 1,500 ha ) consisting of three parts:  the Strelets Steppe (420 ha ),  Stanytsia Luhanska (500 ha ), and  the Provalye Steppe (580 ha ).

Luhansk region: a cityscape
There are hundreds species of local flora: trees, feather grass vegetation and brushwood.

You can see a horse and a steppe marmot on the coat-of-arms of Luhansk region. Steppe marmots inhabit large areas in Luhansk Natural Reserve and are among the endangered species. If you want to know more about the local flora and fauna, you can visit our museum of local lore located in Shevchenko Street in Luhansk. Each district center or a city of regional subordination has a local lore museum. I have often included visiting the local lore museum into my visit to this or that town or county center. I think it is a must for visitors. A visit to the local lore museum will give you a better idea of the history and culture of the area.

The River Seversky Donets flowing to the southeast to the River Don, a huge Russian river, divides our region into two parts:  the agricultural northern one consisting of hilly plain and  the industrial southern one consisting of the Donets Ridge, a plain with an elevation of 200-250 m (650-800 ft).

The highest point in Luhansk region is not far from the city of Krasny Looch: Mount Mosque Grave (Mohyla Mechetna) that is 367 m (1,200 ft) above sea level. River valleys and ravines dissect the southern part of the region. This part of the region is rich in coal, marl, chalk, clay and other mineral resources. The biggest industrial centers are located in this part of the region: Alchevsk, Lyssychansk, Stakhanov (now Kadiyevka) and others.

Among the 122 rivers flowing in our region, one should mention the right-bank tributaries of the Seversky Donets: the Luhanka, the Velyka Kamianka and the left-bank tributaries: the Borova, the Aydar, the Derkul, the Krasna. You can bathe in some of the tributaries, but not in the Donets itself for it has been forbidden by the sanitary inspection for about 15 years already.

There are  60 lakes and more than 300 ponds and other water reserves.

Luhansk region: endless wheat fields
They say you can only bathe in five of the lakes and in several ponds… In other words, bathing is at your own risk! Be careful! The stubborn statistics says that about 100 persons find their death in the lakes and ponds of Luhansk region. Many of the victims were drunk...

Sadly, our region takes the third place in Ukraine after Donetsk region and Dnipro region – the industrially developed regions - in environmental pollution. All rivers, lakes, land and air seem to be polluted, even though you might not notice it at first sight. It is not safe to bathe in our rivers and lakes, although people do bathe there at their own risk. In spite of all that we do find nice places in the country to spend a couple of enjoyable hours with our friends...The official information does not sound very promising though...It is going from bad to worse...

The steppe marmot is one of the symbols of Luhansk region.

The steppe marmot, the symbol of Luhansk region
It is represented on the coat-of-arms of the region. The steppe marmot is a kind and cute animal. It is a symbol of our good nature, our love for our land. Today environmentalists warn that the steppe marmot is an endangered animal, so we need serious programs that will help to preserve it for future generations. Formal license to hunt steppe marmots is not given, but poachers continue shooting the poor animal for meat and for fat. The State Administration of Environmental Protection in Lugansk region states that if in the near future proper measures of protecting the animal are not developed and adopted, the threat of extinction of this species is becoming more and more real.

The lack of land for state reserve is another major reason for reducing the number of marmots, environmentalists say.

In order to balance the natural situation, we need more than one thousand hectares of land. Live and see.

Alexander Romanenko, a handicraft artist from the village of Grechishkino Novoaydar District, has made lots of wooden sculptures of the steppe marmot , and presented them at the festivities dedicated to the 77th anniversary of Luhansk region that took place in Victory Square, Syeverodonetsk, on the first weekend of June. He makes these sculptures of ash-tree wood. Here are some of his works.  Website: http://alex0904.livejournal.com/57523.html
