Travbuddy Marija downtown. She wore the tiny horseman on her head especially for my visit
Today I met up with Marija (MariahK) from Travbuddy!  I was happy to get to meet her, she had helped me out with some Croatian lessons before I came, and turned out to be a really cool person. We met "at the bottom of the escalator, I'll have a pink umbrella" which was easy because people seem to wear all dark colors here so her pink umbrella and my bright yellow hat were easy to pick out in the rush hour crowd.

She's studying achitecture in Zagreb so gave me a great tour and history of the old city.  I had been to most of the places on my own earlier in the week, but finally got the story behind why they were there and why they were important. I learned that Zagreb means "The Ditch" and that it was originally two adjacent and constantly warring walled cities. They eventually combined and eventually became the capital after the old capital at Varazdin burned. The old city is on two levels, with the upper and lower cities connected by a lot of really long staircases! You have to be in pretty good shape to move around the city on foot, but it makes for some nice views from lookouts over the lower city.
