Cross-country skiing trail to Mt. Kahleberg left, hiking trail right side.

This entry describes the cross-country ski tour from Altenberg via Zinnwald-Georgenfeld and Rehefeld to Hermsdorf. It takes you to the main crest of the Eastern Erzgebirge mountains, to the highest peak on the German side (Mt. Kahleberg, 905 m) and along the border to the Czech Republic. I did this as a day trip, also did parts of this on other occasions as short tours in the morning or afternoon. There are several restaurants, hotels and mountain huts along the way, so you can also stay overnight, have lunch or coffee breaks etc.

I travelled to Altenberg by train: Start was in Dresden main railway station by commuter train S1 with a change in Heidenau to regional train RB 72, which runs along the beautiful Müglitz valley up to Altenberg (754 m).

Once in Altenberg a short visit of the Tourist Information in the railway station building is a *must*, getting info on current trail conditions, maps, opening hours of restaurants, accommodation info if you need, schedules of buses etc. There are also lockers there, showers/toilets and a changing room.

The perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails start across the street. It only takes a half hour until I reached the top of Mt. Kahleberg (905 m). The panoramic views from there are excellent, there is also a basic mountain hut where you can get a snack/drink and warm up. From there the trail runs to Zinnwald-Georgenfeld, without much loss/gain of elevation, arriving at Hotel Lugsteinhof, where you can have lunch if you want. I stopped at Beerenhütte, a rustic mountain hut, instead. The trail only passes the uppermost houses of Neu-Georgenfeld, a settlement of Lutheran migrants (Exulants) from some hundred years ago before reaching another mountain hut, Lugsteinbaude, from where the trail runs down to Rehefeld (700 m).
Unspoilt nature near Neuhermsdorf.

I decided to take the chair lift of the downhill skiing area to get up to Mt. Hemmschuh at 846 m instead of the cross-country skiing trail, as I had some more kilometres ahead of me. Shortly after getting off the chair lift I reached the trail again, which now led on the former narrow-gauge steam train route (closed many years ago) to the tiny village Neuhermsdorf. At hotel and restaurant SWF Sporthotel I left the trail and headed up to the village. On other occasions I had stayed overnight here, once in Hotel Wettin, another time in Landhotel Altes Zollhaus. I also had enjoyed very good meals in both hotels.

I now followed the side trail to Hermsdorf (750 m), a larger village even with parish church, restaurants, bakery, grocery, skilift etc. The bus #373 took me back to Altenberg's railway station, where I caught the train back to Dresden.
