Brian with ticket (Rome to Orvieto)

This blogs begins where the 9 Days in Sicily blog left off with the entry All things Must Pass. After our time in Sicily we had another 9 days planned to take on central Italy, covering the provinces of Lazio, Umbria, Toscana and Veneto. Specifically, the plan included following the path of ( Palermo —> Rome —> Orvieto —> Bolsena —> Siena —> Florence —> Venice —> Rome ) all in 9 days time. Ambitious yes, but doable. I had been to Rome a few times (1995, 1998 & 2005), Florence a couple times (1998 & 2007) and Venice once before (1998), so I had a good idea of what was possible without rushing through places too much.

Tong with ticket (Rome to Orvieto)
The years mentiond are linked to the respective places in my L'Avventura Dell Italia blog. This would be my first time visiting Bolsena and Siena. I would have the pleasure of sharing Rome, Florence and Venice with Tong and seeing these places again through her perspective.

The plan this day was to take a morning flight fro Palermo to Rome, take the Leonardo express from Rome Fiumicino airport to Rome Termini station and then catch a train from Termini to Orvieto in the Umbria province. We had an excellent and timely flight, but as always, it's a slog getting through Rome airport. One generally has to be bused from the plane to the terminal, then walk for what seems like forever to get where you want to be. We eventually made it to Stazione Ferroviaria to get the Leonardo Express to Termini Station. After a 40 minute ride we arrived in Termini. I used a machine to get our tickets, fairly quick and easy once I found one that worked. Funny how many of the machines seem stuck in limbo somewhere or simply don't respond. We had some difficulty finding the correct track and once we did we rushed as fast as we could, but wouldn't you know it the 1pm train was just pulling away. We missed it and would have to wait another couple of hours for the next one at 3pm. We had some snacks & drinks, so just waited it out with a bit of patience until the next train and eventually persevered to gain our way to Orvieto.

Indeed, and after our time in Sicily we were ready to begin our Central Italy trip. By plane, train and auto from early morning to late afternoon we eventually got where we wanted to be to start the journey.
