Unplanned trip to more archaeological sites

We arrive at Uxmal

On the second last day of our Mexico vacation we were just planning to move around Merida city by taking the 'hop on hop off' bus from the main square which is just a stone's throw away from our hotel.

That morning as we were sitting down in the small park nearby, working out the sightseeing schedule for the day, we saw a familar figure walk by.  It was Jose our tour guide who took us to Chichen Itza the previous day!  He recognized us immediately and we exchanged pleasantries.

He asked us what our plans for the day were.  We said nothing much, and when we asked him why he was in the area he replied that he was picking up a guest who was staying at the hotel next to ours.  His job for that day was to take a tour group to Uxmal and Kabah, two other archaeological zones in Yucatan state.

Different rates for admission
Although these two sites are not as well known at Chichen Itza they aren't as far, so at the spur of the moment we decided to join him.  We agreed on the same rate which we paid for our Chichen Itza excursion (525 peso/person).

Besides the American man from the hotel next door, there were only a Mexican husband and wife from the city of Puebla in our group. So, only 5 altogether, including the two of us which made it ideal as far as tour groups go.  The Mexican couple spoke good English and Jose did most of the explanations in English.

As mentioned above, both Uxmal and Kabah are not so well known, but they are officialy recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as cultural heritage sites of Humanity.

More fees to the site!
There were a lot fewer people at both places when we were there.  I didn't even see any souvenir stalls.  Nevertheless, the tour was as interesting as the Chichen Itza trip although the lunch at Uxmal consisted of only a set meal.  See attached photos for more information.

As the day before, Jose did a great job and took care of us in a professional but friendly manner.  There is still a lot of negative media coverage of Mexico, which I think is a bit unfair as every country has its good and bad points.  As far as I'm concerned, I would not hesitate to visit Mexico again and hope that I can do so in the near future.

I feel so privileged to discover this ancient civilization of the Mayan indigenous people whose amazing culture is still deeply rooted in the glorious history of Mexico.

VIVA MEXICO !!
