The flight from hell! What an awful way to sign off!

Copenhagen airport - the plane that'll take me to Brussels

When I woke up on Sunday morning, 4am to be precise, I was thinking "could this holiday have gone any smoother?". Well, BIG MOUTH me. It did go smooth yes...but I should've saved the happy thoughts till I reached Seattle!

I got dressed soon, cleaned the house 1 last time (and ensured I  hadn't left anything lying around), and headed out to the station. Caught the metro (the metro is near 24x7. Even at this time of the day, it was crowded). Checked in (took forever to find the Customs place to hand in my VAT forms to) and  had plenty of time to surf and wait for my flight to Brussels. I saw the most interesting family: he was British, she was African and they had 3 kids. I wasn't quite sure to make of the kids' accent (so I couldn't tell which country they are based in).

Early morning departures
Anyway the flight was smooth. I was last row seated with 2 Swede teens headed to Nice. They own their own label! It was a nice flight - they were chatting about Swedish life, how they find American communication aggressive at times, they asked me about Trump, etc. - all good conversation. I didn't buy anything on board because everything, inc. tea was on for sale!

Our flight landed a few hours in advance. I like the Brussels airport. It's like a horse shoe with one end for the Schengen and other for the non-Schengen flights, the middle section being the security check and passport control and stuff. I made my way to the gate, all seemed well. So I sat myself listening to music. I also treated myself to an awful waffle.

UNTIL... I noticed a lot of people gathering around the desk and wondering what was going on.

More planes
Well, turns out the flight had been delayed! From a 10a to a 7p departure. Yep, 9 hours. So needless to say, not a lot of happy campers. They also wouldn't give out info on taking flights on other Star Alliance carriers. So a lot of angry customers.

I decided against going into town (because I had heavy hand baggage, including tableware) so just hung around the airport writing blogs of my previous trips, facetiming with friends and family, etc. The time difference between EU and America made it hard for me to find folks to facetime with. We got 2 vouchers of 15E each, I made sure I spent both wisely!

Finally, by 530p the gang started to regroup, and our plane arrived at the gate by 6pm. We were postponed for anther 30 minutes or so but finally airbound around 730p.

I was seated next to geek who was visiting SF and Seattle. I was suitably impressed with Brussels Airlines. My veg meal didn't disappoint, AND they served us ice cream. Very friendly service - and nice witty serviettes and stuff. V comfy and well maintained aircraft.  I saw "Premier Crus" which was enjoyable. I saw another movie on a man's revenge on his ex's boyfriend who kills his daughter but can't remember the name of the film now.

Flight was fairly smooth and we landed  in IAD shortly after 10pm. There was a sole Lufthansa ready to depart.

After fairly quick immigration and customs, we all queued up to get our hotel vouchers. We all boarded the bus to our respective hotels but had to wait for nearly 2 hours before the bus got going (at sharp midnight).

And we're here in Brussels Airport. There's our aircraft. Or at least what I thought was our aircraft, LOL!
We finally reached our hotel past midnight. We had a dinner voucher but I was too tired to eat. I just showered and slept! Fortunately I had my luggage with me (so had a change of clothes and all).

I woke up the following morning at 5am. Not the long luxurious sleep I was looking for, but this was good enough. I rushed through breakfast (packed some) to catch the shuttle to the airport. IAD, esp the United wing was something else during a Monday 7am! Plus, they couldn't locate our record locator so we had a bit of a runaround. I was confirmed for the flight but no seat given. Made my way to the gate (what an old complicated airport!), waited and finally got a seat (by the exit row no less). The flight was fairly peaceful, landed in Seattle past noon and Uber'ed my way home.

That's the way it goes. Flights in Europe often are cheap, but you pay for everything extra. Check-in luggage, food and drinks on board, choosing your seat. I am waiting for using the toilet.
