The Pearl of the Adriatic
May 21, 2005
Venice began with an evening meal at a wonderful restaurant in Venice. We took our bus from the hotel to where we could we water-taxied out onto the island. Naturally the dinner was delicious and of course was fish. What else would you eat in Venice. Good wine, good music, and good food.
After dinner, we strolled to St. Mark's Square. The evening stroll made so much sense. No pigeons, less people, and all of the wonderful architecture of the Byzantine Basilica, lavish Doges' Palace and the clock tower. And the music played at all of the stages was relaxing and fun.
For some reason we left our camera at the hotel, so no super shots of Venice. Just as a tip: Don't forget yours!

“The Burchiello” hotel, is situated on the mainland in the Brenta Riviera, between Mira and Oriago, and is only a short distance from Venice and its international airport. The hotel is linked to Padua and Venice by bus (every 30 minutes) and by the characteristic waterways used by “the Burchiello” boat, with its own mooring in front of the hotel. This very nice four-star hotel boasts a fine restaurant, very good-sized rooms and excellent service staff. We found the color scheme to be very well done in white with blue trim throughout. Parking seemed to be the only drawback here. The parking lot was extremely small.

Not everything on a bus tour is hectic and fast paced, and luckily for us one of the slowest paced things on this tour was dinner in Venice and then a slow stroll around to St Marks’ Square. Venice at night is just plain romantic. The pigeons are gone, the crowds are much smaller, the lights twinkle, the music is soft and lilting, and time is slow and relaxed. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and a couple of glasses of wine and even had strolling musicians throughout dinner with the fun group we were with and then given a “slow strolling tour”. Just the right way to see Venice. At night St. Mark’s square is turned into a group of small concerts, with musicians at various spots around the square. Small groups consisting of piano, violins, and accordions play waltzes and soft easy music while people sit and drink, nibble, and just relax. It is a wonderful thing to enjoy. And somehow even the canal boats and gondolas are better at night.
