Today we rose early, about 6a.m. for a long travel day. Again, a very good breakfast at the hotel. On the bus at 7:15a.m. and on our way to Germany. My knee was sore from all the walking yesterday. Our first stop was along the autobaun at a gas station for the U-know-what-break. Very clean and well stocked with snacks, and drinks.
Item to note: We found in Europe that they do not chill soft drinks like we do in the United States. Finding a Cold Coke is impossible.
Cologne, or Koln as it is known in Germany, was our first major stop. Time for a quick lunch and time to see the magnificent Gothic Cathedral. With two nearly 600 foot spires, this is the tallest Gothic style Church in all of Europe. And they are still trying to remove the dark coal suet from the exterior. The stained glass is beautiful and there are wonderful statues everywhere. This Cathedral makes one feel very small. The high ceiling and overall size made you feel quite insignificant.
On south we get to take about a one hour voyage down the Rhine River. Many castles, and other sights. Quite enjoyable, and the top deck of the ship allows a clear view for photos and serves whatever you'd like to drink. We had great weather. Although the forcast had been for rain the day before and showers today, we had clear, nearly cloud-free skies, and nice temperatures for May.
