Fortress Hohensalzburg - majestic castle atop the Mönchsberg peak overlooking Salzburg city
Salzburg is well known not only for its beauty, arts and history but also for their most famous son - one world's most beloved composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Being the second time in Salzburg, I was over with the excitment of visiting Mozart's birthplace or tasting the Mozartkudeln. On our one day stopover to our next destination Hallstatt, we went to visit the Fortress Hohensalzburg built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard which is considered as the largest and fully preserved fortress in central Europe.
It was coincidental that there was a pipe organ performance on the same evening at Salzburg cathedral, Dom. We never regretted buying the tickets and attending the performance as the music from the main pipe organ and two smaller side organs were so wonderful that it reached deep down one's soul.
We departed the next day by train to Hallstatt, a pretty and quintessential town surrounded by mountains and a lake.
