The view from my hotel room.
Excited to be exploring a whole new city and what it had to offer, I woke up early (well, 10:00) and planned my itinerary. Seeing that it was a bit cloudy and threatening to rain, I decided to start out by getting breakfast (I slept in late) at a local supermarket. As my hotel was conveniently located one block from the Opera House and Andrassy Ut I wandered up this main street looking at the shops, buildings, embassy compounds and finally ended at the Millennium Monument. Along the way are a myriad of notable buildings, among them, the Opera House, the Oktogon, Museum of Terror (or House of Terror), Liszt Memorial Museum, and the Kodaly Korond (an elegant square). I retreated into the Museum of Terror because it started to rain heavily and it was also recommended by a friend.
I would highly encourage visitors not to miss this place, it was an excellent museum. At the Millennium Monument, I was treated to a wreath laying ceremony. After that it was back to the Opera House to meet a friend who lived there. We wandered to Vaci Ute (a pedestrian street with lots of touristy stores and high priced restaurants) to have a meal. Then it was a walk across the Chain Bridge to the Buda Palace. Finally as the sun set, we bid our farewells and I tried walking back to my hotel. It took me another hour and two loops to realize I was heading in a circle and in the wrong direction. By this time, my legs were killing me and I just wanted to lay on my bed. So in the right direction, it took me ten minutes to walk back to my hotel! Frustrating to me, indeed!
