Pura vida!
So this summer, I took off for two weeks to Samara, Costa Rica. Samara is a small village on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica. I was a wonderful experience! I went through an organization called Volunteer Visions. (You can find them online.) I went only for two weeks, but it was very rewarding, and I would go again for longer in a heartbeat! One of the great aspects of my trip was gettting to see how people really live in Samara. I stayed with a host family in Maquenco, who was very warm and generous to me, even despite my lacking Spanish ability. The project i did was 'construction and Renovation', but some other volunteers I met and become good friends with also taught in local schools or participated in community development.
On the weekends, we took mini two day trips to see more of the country/culture. For example, we did a tour of a coffee plantation, visited La Fortuna near Monteverde, soaked in the hot thermal springs, saw the Volcano Arenal, zip-lined through rainforests, horseback rode to a massive waterfall, local shopping (of course!), and ate as many mangos and pinapples as we could stuff in our mouths! :) There is just so much amazing eco-tourism in that country-you should really go and see for yourself-it's truly beautiful-I hope we can take care of our Earth to perserve such beauty!
It was still the rainy season in July, but it really wasn't very bad-each day midafternoon/2pm-ish it would rain for about an hour, but then the sun came right back out again, and we could continue enjoying the beach!
Well, if anyone has more questions, feel free to ask! I will happily share more. Overall, I found the Costa Ricans, so warm, lovely and greatful for what they have in their lives! It was so refeshing to see! So....Pura Vida!- Life is good! :) Enjoy it!
