Beaches of Corfu!
In summer 2007, a friend from America and I took a getaway trip to Corfu, Greece. The trip started out on a good note when I reached Corfu airport, turned on my phone, and received a text from my company, stating all workers had received a 200 Euro bonus for summer holidays! Alright-Way to start my vacation! :) So my friend and I rented a small car, in celebration. Don't be intimated by the small cars there-they can do hills and curves on dirt roads like you wouldn't imagine, by the way. So, we drove to the place we were staying on the west coast-Pelekas Beach. Great little place-cheap and the food included. It had a little bar right at the beach and long hours of sunshine! (Bikini tops optional) Very chill atmosphere.
So, each morning (morning? well, whenever we rolled out of bed) we had an amazing traditional Greek breakfast at our hotel, chose north, south, east, west, and then simply started driving. The radio stations had pumpin' techno music it seemed ALL day -so there was always good music to drive to, windows down with the sun in your face. Whenever we thought, we would siimply pull over and scope out the beach. There are TONS as Corfu is a narrow island. Each beach seems to be beautiful from what we saw. We saw a lot so it's hard to remember, (unfortunately) which ones to recommend. I was in the moment too much to write/take notes as to exactly where we went. The good news is though, that you REALLY can't go wrong with where you go. They have varying amounts of activity, locals, seclusion, nudity, waves, umbrellas, sand, rocks, bars/restaurants. But there's a bit of everything for whatever your taste is on the island. By far, the one that sticks out in my mind is Paleokastritsa. It was VERY nice-the water was SO clear, and there are several bays where you can swim to, kayak around, or take glass bottom boats, snorkeling, etc. There was also a beach on the Northwest coast, that i really loved too, but I can't remember it's name. Barbati, Nissaki, Ag. Stefan, Kassiopi....i'm not sure. But best advice-Just explore- You'll have fun.-I guarantee it :)
We also went into Corfu Town one day. It was fun for a day in the city-lots of shopping. I got a "Gucci" purse for only 20 euro. Can you imagine?-haha. But there are lots of vendors selling practically anything. Beach towels, olive wood carved bowls, local greek music cd's, beach supplies, the bright orange kumquat liquor in bottles in the shape of Corfu, other souveniers, etc. I bought 8 euros and maybe 3 pounds worth of pastries from an adorable Greek girl who was SUCH a saleswoman-at 8 YEARS OLD!! My goodness-she caught me and I just HAD to buy every dessert she suggested! There are also plenty of places to have greek coffees in Corfu town. You MUST try some while you are there! And there is ouzo too...ok, that's a different story. That was a little too strong for me! haha
Well, if anyone has more questions, feel free to ask!! It's always nice to re-live trips and hopefully give helpful advice when possible to other interested travelers! :)
