FADO IS PORTUGAL

Lisbon Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Anyone ever heard of Madredeus? Come on in and read about Lisbon. Friendly people, nice food, beautiful places of interest and a very good night life.

FADO IS PORTUGAL

Lisbon, Jeronimos Monastery, Portugal

Fado is Portugal’s folk music, the very 1st time I heard it was a song called 'Coisas Pequenas' by Madredeus. I am so angry at that time because my date stood me up, I was outside FNAC in Oporto in North Portugal and this song was playing, suddenly I feel relaxed and I listened closely. My anger went away, and I smiled. No other music have that kind of effect on me, so I guess that is good therapy for me! And from that day, I became a fan of Madredeus and Fado music.

The music brought me to Lisbon and I was there in November 2006.

Lisbon-Tram, Portugal
I am so glad I made it there. I stayed at a very cosy hotel called Anjo Azul at Barrio Alto, 3stars, nothing fancy but have a character. It was recommended by a friend I met online. A few meters from the hotel, there was a shop where I can get my tit bits, breakfast supply like bread, milk and fruits. It was very convenient. It was walking distance almost everywhere, restaurants, shopping area, sauna, cafes, internet cafe etc. In the evening the bars were open everywhere in Barrio Alto. Especially during the weekend, the place was full with people, young and old, tourist and local blend together. My favourite was going from to one bar to another and trying the local red wine, each bar have different wines. So you try to imagine what happen to me after 4 bars? Ask me, I will tell you ;-) You can move around Lisbon by tram, bus or train (very modern), I didn't try the taxi, so I don't know how much it cost. Using the tram is a fun way to get from one place to another and to see the city.

I stayed only 4 days in Lisbon and there are so many places to see and visit.

Lisbon-Local Delicacies at Republica da Cerveja, Portugal
I went to Lisbon Cathedral, built after 1147 over the remnants of the mosque of Islamic period, the Moors was there for sometime, it is beautiful. Then I went to Belem Tower, it is in front of the Cathedral which I must see after seeing it on Amazing Race(my favourite reality TV show!). The next day I went to Lisbon Castle, still standing strong and the view from the top is breathtaking. There are two squares that’s not very far from my hotel, Rossio Square and Camoes Square. You will enjoy walking along Augusta Street and this street lead you to a Statue of King Jose the 1st in the Commerce Square. Very touristic area and along the street are shops and cafes. If you are a woman, I think you better bring a lot of money, I saw many shoes, hats and handbags ;-P not as expensive as Paris, I think.

The most interesting place I found in Lisbon, a place where not many tourists know of was a restaurant called Casa Do Alentejo. The design and decoration was an exact replica of the Al Hambra and Moors, it brought memories back to Granada, nice place and I had tea there with a nice Brazilian lady friend, sweet moment. Someone told me, the owner loved Al Hambra so much that he designed the restaurant like that, well, how far that is true? I don't know. The other place that everyone must go are Cafe A Brasileira in the Chiado neighbourhood, it is like a meeting place. In front of the café there was a bronze statue of poet Fernando Pessoa, someone told me that every tourist who come to Lisbon must take a photograph with him, if not, no validation that you were in Lisbon, sigh!

I had a great time in Lisbon, I regretted that I didn't stay more days there but at the same time I am glad that I was there.

Lisbon-Me and Fernando Pessoa, Portugal
There are still some other places I have not visited, but hey, I can always come back right? At least now I know what to expect and I made some nice friends. This time I will bring along my party friends. Anyone want to join me? ;-)

By the way, I did asked my lady friend, what the meaning of 'Coisas Pequenas', and she said 'small things', well maybe I shouldn't sweat on a small things then, J.

I have heard a bit of Madredeus' music, and I must say that what I've heard has been great. They were featured in a movie called The Lisbon Story. I had a nice trip to Lisobn as well, but I need to go back for more time. I was only there for 2 days :(

If you like Fado you must hear "Amália"(the best) or "Mariza".
Check the names at youtube, and you will find.

'Kill two birds with one stone'. For a tourist, you can enjoy your meal and drink, and at the same time, you can take some nice photo like the one I did. The restaurant divided into a few rooms. They have a bar and the other potion is a restaurant. I was told that you could even have a private function at his place. You can see a small stage and a nice big chandelier in one of this room. It can look like a ballroom. I will definitely come back here the next time I come to Lisbon and this time I will bring along more friends. Hope this info help, gives me some feedback if you go. Look at my photograph, look like Al Hambra right? ;-) I like to be in this kind of environment. Very nostalgic and beautiful.
Outside of the restaurant, look ...
This is not Al Hambra.

Have you heard a boutique hotel? This is one of those but the good thing about it; it is a walking distant to everywhere. Infront of this hotel are many bars and restaurant. It helps if you plan to enjoy a good night out and do not have to bother about driving because you can walk back to your hotel. The people in this hotel are very friendly, even the house cleaner are nice to us. She even asks me if I have any laundry to do. Even though some of them do not speak English but they seems to understand me perfectly well and make me feel good.
There are also a safe in each room. I will definitely stay here again next time I come to Lisbon. I vouch for any of you that want a good, reasonable price and friendly environment hotel.

I fully recommended for the first timer, take a look at the site http://www.cb2web.com/anjoazul/ , I love it!
