Our great day started with a sunny warm morning in Varmaland! (Free campground) Warm is like 56°.

We visited the Varmaland pool (all pools are geothermally heated and have hot tubs- it's also the best place to shower) and were by ourselves but met a lovely German woman who worked there who came to Iceland 20 years ago and stayed. She gave us good advice for things to see along the ring road.

We walked the edge of dormant volcano crater, rode an Icelandic horse (Lia), shopped in a wool outlet where they make the sweaters ($170-$200 each) and accessories (me), and hiked to a desolate roaring river gulch.

Are in Akureyri Campground tonight, the northern capital.

Drove a lot in 2 days but should be able to coast from here.

Pictures just cannot capture the grandeur of the surroundings nor the immense silence. Special place indeed!

**Later that day:  Our friend from the plane ride here is trying to get back to the U.S. today but an Icelandic Air Traffic Controller strike has him stranded (in a former U.S. Air Force base) in Reykjavik! Maybe we need not hurry so much!
