We checked out of the Waterfall Villas after breakfast and drove back up the Coast Highway (which they don't call the Coast Highway - at least I never saw any signs for it). Right after Jaco we saw the billboard we had seen on the way down that said, "Fruity Monkey Poop." It's been our catchphrase this whole week (said with a bad Italian accent for some reason, like "Frrrruity Monkey Poop"), so we had to stop and get a picture of it.

We stopped at a great soda to get lunch - best food so far (I got a pork chop plate and a guanabana smoothie) and then we returned the car to Hertz by San Jose Airport and grabbed a cab to Don Carlos Hotel in the city.

The hotel is, as always with these kinds of tours (mid-priced, small-group adventure tours), a bit funky with local flavor--clean, but aging. There are Costa Rican artifacts strewn around the various levels of the place, and life-size bronze statues of Costa Rican people sitting on benches and standing around the hotel.

Met with the Intrepid Travel tour group in the lobby at 6pm--it's a full group of 12 (12 is the max) and we are the only Americans...most from England, Scotland and Australia, plus Mario who is a local guide from Guatemala and is learning how Intrepid runs their full tours. Our guide is Esteban, from San Jose. He's a running and mountain sports addict. He told us over dinner in the hotel restaurant about all his marathons, triathlons, etc.

We have a nice group: Sarah from Sydney, Jane--an Aussie who now lives in Oxford, Richard from England, Mario from Guatemala, Stuart and Ruth--a couple from north of Edinburgh, Stuart and Rhiannon--a couple from York area, and Len and Jean, a couple from England. We had a group dinner in the hotel's restaurant and got to bed early - early start in the morning.
