The waterfalls at Waterfall Villas
2/15/16, San Jose

Arriving late in the afternoon into San Jose on Alaska Airlines (yes, Alaska), we took a van to pick up our Budget car rental, passing our hotel on the way (a short driving or even walking distance from the airport), and realizing we should have held off on picking up the not-so-budget-friendly car one day. The two necessary insurances for the car were over $50USD per day (+ $40 rental per day). We stayed overnight at the Hampton Inn by the airport because I could get it for $29 through my Hilton affiliation.

After a great breakfast buffet with a mix of American food (make-your-own waffles!) and local food (gallo pinto--the ubiquitous beans & rice dish, and a kind of horchata drink made of rice and pineapple.
Typical "Casado" (plate of the day) at a local soda (cafe) off the highway.
..yum), we got on the road to Dominical.

It's about a 4-hour ride on the new Coast Highway. Our lodgings had sent us directions telling us to take this, as it's not on GPS yet. However, not finding any signs that said Coast Highway (it's all via numbers, not names), we did follow Googlina's directions, and turns out, the GPS IS updated and it was the right road. We stopped off at a local roadside "soda" (locals cafe) for lunch and caffe con leche before arriving at our eco-lodge, Waterfall Villas.

The manager was at the store when we arrived, and the staff doesn't speak English, so one of them called the manager, and we sat in the covered dining area with our welcome juice drinks until he arrived and checked us in. The lodge is made up of a couple of individual bungalows, laced together with paths and boardwalks.

Our Butterfly Suite feels like a treehouse, with a balcony and a view into the jungle, and the sound of the waterfalls. We put our swimsuits on and trekked down the river path to the large falls, which are beautiful - very geometric, the way the rocks have formed - but ultimately not enough water to swim in, just wade around and sit in. We saw a small wasp nest on the way back with huge bright yellow wasps. The jungle noises are very loud, but haven't seen any other wildlife besides lizards, birds and butterflies. I'm on the lookout for sloths though!

We were told by many people not to drive at night if you can help it, so we just drove a short way down the street to a local soda and ate there. I had fish fillet with garlic after everything I wanted wasn't available. So far, the food isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. The bugs aren't as bad as I thought they would be but Morgan hates any bugs - he put the mosquito net down around the bed even though we had the a/c blasting and the entire room was closed!
