"Tomorrow will be a Good Day" . . .
October 20, 2007
"Tomorrow will be a Good Day". That is what my husband said as he logged on to Vent to play World of Warcraft. That was Friday night, the day before his birthday. He is never excited about anything so I was surprised to hear that
The plan for Saturday was that he and his brother hang out at the Lighthouse Beer Fest while I sit in the car to read my book "The Longest Winter" by Alex Kershaw. Designated Drivers pay $13 to walk around at a park surrounded by alcohol that they can not consume. Ridiculous I say
The day of, we called ahead and found out that the event was sold out. They could wait in line at the park to try their luck and eventually be surrounded by loud, rowdy college kids. So the plan changed. We went downtown again. And this time, I had total control of the camera
Our first stop was Paddy's Hollow Restaurant & Pub. The only place for us to go each time we visit downtown. They have a really great staff. It is an Irish pub that is more American. I had a Crab Dip served with Garlic Bread which was nothing special. My brother-in-law had Coconut Shrimp with a Sweet & Spicy Sauce. That was excellent. My husband had his usual Corned Beef on Rye with Melted Swiss Cheese. I wrote a review of this place from a previous visit.
From the not so Irish pub, we walked around a bit until we got to Fat Tony's Italian Pub. This Italian pub had an Irish flag on the wall. Their menu did look Italian. We just had beer here and listened to some non-stop classic rock.
After our second Pub, we then went on to The Front Street Restaurant & Brewery. This was our second visit and again, the service was bad. We ordered a Beer Sampler and Calamari. It was very crowded and noisy.
After 3 Pubs and full of beer, except for the designated driver, we wandered around until we got to Orange Street and my brother in-law insisted that I tour the Cape Fear Serpentatrium. He was so sure I would enjoy it. At the entrance we were greeting by a parrot, a strange looking serpent
So we go in and there are cases and cases of reptiles. Well, yours truly is kinda scared of snakes so I was praying none were on the loose
They had so many snakes on display of different colors and sizes. A few were actually pretty but still pretty scary
We saw a Monitor Lizard inside the Boa Constrictor's case which would have been his dinner. We didn't see him get eaten, not sure if I would have wanted to see that

I drove us all home safely after a pretty enjoyable day downtown ending in a room full of snakes.
I managed to take plenty of pictures this time. Many of the pictures in the Serpentarium either came out blurry or had bright flashes of light reflecting from the cases

This was our second visit. Again the service was bad. The server took my husbands order then left without asking my brother-in-law and me about our orders. When she returned, she did apologize.
My husband ordered a 5 beer sampler. The Oktoberfest was not very good. The Belgian Wit was the best out of the mix. My brother in-law and I shared a Calamari. It was not very good. On our previous visit, we were not impressed with the food either.
The place was packed with tourists and locals mostly there to watch college football on one of the many TVs. It was noisy from people talking, fans cheering and kids throwing tantrums. Not a very pleasant experience. If we do go back, it will be just for the beer. I doubt thought that we will ever return.

As we were nearing Orange Street, my brother-in-law insisted that we go to the Serpentarium. He said I would enjoy it. Ok so it wasn’t bad. They were all, except one that I did notice, in enclosed cases. No loose snakes slithering around. Yay for that.
We walked into the museum and were greeted by two parrots. Are these a new breed of serpents? When we entered the exhibit area, the first thing we saw was dead snakes in a display case on the right. They were all immersed in formaldehyde yet scary looking.
We then saw a Crocodile, the first of many. There were also a few types of Dragons and Lizards. There were many different species of snakes. They ranged from the dull to the very colorful. Some were non-poisonous and some were the most dangerous.
If you like reptiles, you should check this place out. You might even catch some feeding in action.
Tickets are $8.00. Children under 2 years of age are free. They also offer discounted group rates and birthday parties.

Located in the Historic Downtown of Wilmington is this Italian Pub with an Irish flag on the wall. I have no idea what that is about.
We just stopped for beer. They have a few Red Wines, less White Wines, some Bottled Beers and 25 Draft Beers. They have more domestic beers than European brands.
Their menu consists of Italian fares with several types of pizzas. We did not order any food here. I don't think I ever will eat here since I saw that their Sanitation score was 91%, an 89% without ServeSafe which means a "B" grade.
I'm not sure how busy they get. We were here on a Sat afternoon at the same time a Beer Fest was happening on the other side of town. They did have an excellent music selection of Classic Rock. I would go back just for the beer and music.
They have a second location that just opened on Racine Dr, north of the UNCW campus.
