Hiking Lake Waccamaw . . .
After 4 months, and still settling in, we ventured into the great outdoors of our new state. We set out late in the morning to hike the trails of Lake Waccamaw State Park
We took the Lake Trail. It's the longest trail in the park at 5miles. The path stays along the lake so I kept my eyes open for any alligators that might be lurking about for a daily feeding. My husband saw a snake, thankfully I missed it. I'm a bit scared of snakes. I tend to loose all rationality and senses. We did see quite an amount people in the water with parked boats.
It was a nice day for a swim but I had no intentions of becoming bait for alligators and snakes.
We reached the end of the trail which was a swamp with a dam. It was a nice secluded area. Well, if you ignore the people playing at the dam. There were way too many snake holes.
We hiked back in the rain. There’s just something about hiking and rain. They seem to go together too often. We decided to check out the water. Near the parking lot is a pier. There are ladders at the end leading into the water for the swimmers.

It is popular with boaters who park just close enough to shore and wade in the water. You can also walk to the end of the pier where two ladders are situated for swimmers to use.
There are four campsites which are on a first-come basis. The charge is $9 per site, per day. You are assigned a campsite. They have picnic tables, fire circles and pit toilets.
They have picnic tables and grills available free of charge if you just plan to spend the day there. Restrooms and water fountains are nearby.
Fishing is also available at the park which has fifty-two species of game and non-game fish. The lake is well stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker and redbreast sunfish.
There are five trails for hiking. The shortest is a 700-foot boardwalk from the visitor center. The longest trail is the Lake trail at five-miles leading through the pine forest, along the beach and to the swamp.
I got my first chiggers bite here so if you’re allergic to them, you may not want to go here. It’s a nice place to go to if you don’t want to drive far but want to get away from the city.
