The Airport at Mumbai is pretty standard as far as airports go on the Sub-Continent. The air con is overstretched but everyone seems happy.
Watch out for false information on the luggage retrieval - I was directed to carousel 6 waited for 15 minutes watching bags and then was told the London flight was actually Carousel 3 - though the board still said 6....
A word of warning - if you are catching an internal flight DO NOT LEAVE THE AIRPORT - if you do it is very difficult to et back in - I was warned before hand so not sure how reliable this information is but thought I'd share it with you anyway.
If you are getting an internal flight you will need to get an airport bus to the Domestic airport past all the crashed planes :-) - Yes you read that correctly - there are huls of old planes beside the road the bus follows through the airport and past the shanty towns that line the airport walls.I travelled in the monsoon season and had a brolly available just in case of a sudden downpour - many a soaked experience and bags have taught me to be prepared. All the staff at the airport all seem to be on the look out for a tip - so even if you ask directions to the loo, ticket desk, "am I going the right way to..." - they will ask for a tip - on top of their normal salary of course....
As I am travelling with work I was fortunate to have a Business class ticket - if you have the means for a business class ticket (usually only a few pounds dearer (20-50) then I recommend using the Premier lounge with Jet Airways at the Domestic Airport terminal - it offers a comfortable air-conditioned environment, a free snack and unlimited soft drinks - with the voucher you collect from the check in (having had your bags X-Rayed before you check in) - the voucher will entitle you to 1 free drink - beer, wine, tea, coffee, etc - afterwards it gets expensive - about 4 pounds per beer!!!!
I do recommend this as it has an amazing massage chair which is free to use and is pretty good after a 9 hour flight.
The flight from Mumbai to Pune is incredibly short - only 35 mins.
