Worker at the jade factory

The tour consisted of a visit to a Jade factory, the Ming Tombs, a Friendship store for lunch, the Great Wall at Badaling, dinner in Beijing and a visit to the night market.  So a very long and exhausting day, particularly on a hangover....

I really don’t remember too much about the Jade factory, apart from there being lots of Jade....

The Ming Tombs were quite nice but what I didn’t realise before getting there was that you can’t actually see the tombs - you visit a temple, where I think mourners prayed in days gone by, but don’t quote me on that.

On route to the Friendship Store I was shocked to see a man squatting in the street, having a number 2!  Well, T.

I.C. (this is China), and it happens....If there’s nowhere to go, then there’s apparently nothing wrong with where you’re standing.  There is no embarrassment about bathroom habits it would seem.  Just the vision one wanted before scoffing down a much needed lunch!

After lunch, we made our way to the Great Wall.  When we arrived the weather had turned....it was wet and visibility was really bad, so it was quite cold and we couldn’t see anything. We climbed the Wall anyhow but I was really shocked at myself, because half way up I had a massive vertigo attack, which is not a phobia I usually suffer from.  I hadn’t realised how steep the climb was going to be and had to sit down to stop feeling dizzy. I made it part way up the climb but then had to turn back...

What I also hadn’t realised is that all along the climb they have people selling souvenirs, which is quite surreal.

What’s impressive is that those poor souls have to climb the Wall each day to set up their stall - rather them than me!

I couldn’t stop laughing when we passed a stall where the female owner was shouting ‘pee pee boy, pee pee boy’ at the top of her lungs.  She had a collection of little boys with all exposed made from clay, and was demonstrating how when you pour hot water over the statue, the clay boy would pee!  I couldn’t believe it....Here I am standing at one of the seven great wonders of the world and there’s a lady selling peeing clay statues!  Apparently though, these little clay boys actually have a use....They are otherwise known as tea boys and are used to check when the temperature of the water is right for tea.  There was no way I was leaving the Great Wall without one.

..  After a little negotiation, I walked away with my very own pee boy for the bargain price of ¥5.

Our coach then took us back into the centre of Beijing for dinner, after which we headed to the food night market at Wanfujing.  This is the place where you can sample all those delicacies (?) the Chinese used to eat when food was scarce!  Scorpions, silk worms, grasshoppers and the like don’t appear on too many menus these days, but definitely pull in the tourist at the night market!! Having just eaten supper, I didn’t have room to sample any of the tasty snacks on offer, so ignored the HUGE temptation!!!!  Many others got stuck in which provided great photo opportunities....I think some of the lads couldn’t help but try to out-gross each other....

Once back at UIBE, a group of us decided to head back to the 30 Yuan bar for another cheap night!  After the bar shut, someone threw a party in their apartment, so the drinking and hilarity continued until 5am!  It was a great evening as I got to know a load more people from the course, which ensured my continued fun over the duration of my time at UIBE.
