Eagle man of Kyrgystan

Next day we organised a trip to visit the "eagle man".  Eagle Man is a former head of police for the region which was interesting for us "teachers on leave".  Eagle Man has for many years caught and trained wild eagles.  He enters some of the eagles in annual sporting events in which the eagles are trained to hunt and kill prey as they would in the wild.  Coincidently Paul and I had purchased a rabbit.  A nice fluffy one, white with black dots around the eyes.    The hairy legged daughter drove us in her dad’s car out to meet the eagle man, and to release our rabbit.  We travelled into the beautiful rolling hillside and met this guy on his trusty steed.  Then without further ado we had to release the rabbit.

Off she goes
The Eagle man and eagle were perched on top on the trusty horse.  The eagle’s name - Natasha.  The females weight more and are better hunters, apparently.  Natasha was in off season and had put on 2 kgs and was not in a desperate need of a feed, so it took 3 goes before the eagle got interested in leaving eagle man’s arm and flying some 40 meters and swooping down and lunging at the rabbit which was on the hop.  The eagle had caught the rabbit and was just sitting there on top of the rabbit which was unable to move because of the sheer power of this massive bird, and also to look at us and say come any closer and you will get the same reception.  It was an amazing scene to see this eagle catch a rabbit on the move, running from death’s door.  We later sat down and spoke with eagle man, via the daughter who spoke reasonable English.
