Arrived in Edinburgh...and yes, luggage is all here!! We quickly made our way through passport control, and then found the bus which would take us very close to our hotel.

It was still too early to check in, but they did store our luggage so we could start exploring the city, but first, breakfast. We decided to get breakfast at the hotel since we were both hungry and didn't want to take time walking around looking for a place. They had a breakfast buffet with all the usual things, plus items for a traditional Scottish breakfast...black pudding, haggis, baked beans, etc.

After breakfast, we headed towards Edinburgh Castle to get our bearings for tonight’s big event, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo! Our tickets include dinner inside the castle, so we are really looking forward to this!! We found the front gate to the arena, took some quick pictures, and then headed off into the city to explore.

After a short time, the hotel called me on my mobile and said our room was ready, so we headed back. It was a short 15 minute walk as our hotel is very centrally located. We got settled into our room, got cleaned up and rested a bit before heading back out into the city. There is also a big street festival going on, so there was plenty to look at; food venders, street performers, and lots of people!

We eventually made our way back to Edinburgh Castle and found our meeting point to be escorted into the castle. We knew we would be having dinner inside the castle, but never expected the special treatment we received. We were first escorted through the main gate, then through the castle grounds to the entrance of the dining hall. There we received a brief history of the castle.

Pipers playing for us in the dinning hall of Edinburgh Castle
When entering the dining hall, we were greeting by staff checking our coats, giving us our seating assignments, and offering us glasses of champagne. Lena and I were seated at table 1 with 8 other people. We were served a preset 3 coarse meal witch started with a dram of 12 yr old Single Malt Whisky and Haggis. Then the main course was probably the best chicken I have ever had!! Then finally dessert, a lemon custard which was very good, despite being lemon :)

Just as we were finishing our dessert, two pipers came into the room and played a couple songs for us...an amazing experience, but that was just the beginning! As we left the dining hall and made our way to the stadium, all the pipers and drummer for the show filled the courtyard, playing for us as we walked through the middle of them heading to the arena.

..AWESOME!!! We were blown away by this! That right there was worth the price of the ticket, but we still had an entire show to watch!

The show was great, featuring performers from many different countries, including two groups from the US, the Air Force Precision Drill Team, and a pipe and drum corps from The Citadel. But, my favorite was the drill team know as the Top Secret Drum Corps from Basel, Switzerland. I've seen video of these guys before, so I was super excited when I heard they would be playing The Tattoo this year, as they do not play here every year, and they did not disappoint!

Once the show was over with the traditional lone piper playing from the top of the castle, we made our way back to our hotel and called it a night. What a great start to what we hope will be a great trip around Scotland!
