In Ubud and surroundings you can visit a lot of craftsmen (woodcarving, silver and gold, masks, puppets and paintings!)
It is a very nice village to stroll around and buy some souvenirs. Good internet shops, restaurants and bars available and a beautifull surroundings. Hire a scooter and discover the environment! superb!
Tips for Ubud:
1. Neka museum: beautifull arts (see pictures) from hofker, blanco, affandi, bonnet, abdul azziz and others!
2. same road: Blanco house/museum. A MUST! Beautifull building, beautifull paintings (some very erotic, some so erotic that they are in a special room where not everyone can look....). Also his former atelier can be visited and some of his litho's are for sale... the last ones..... see also his website: www.
3. Visit the Arma resort! The Arma Resort is a Hotel/resort founded bij Agung Rai. Philosophy is: earn money with the hotel/resort/trips and performances of dance/music worldwide and.... hire good teachers for (free!) painting, dance and music lessons for children so culture is preserved. Also Balinese paintings ar bought back from the money for the realy beautifull museum on the compound to preserve Balinese art.
Beautifull to watch the lessons! More than 50 children taking dance lessons or music workshops or painting lessons.... realy impressing!
But... you also can ask for a morning tour with Agung Rai himselves! He will show you the pure bali... sunrise.... little villages..... some meditating in a temple..... Unforgettable.... not only the realy beautifull sights but also talking and being with this charismatic and beautifull man! You do not have to stay in this resort for visiting it! But if you stay... you pay for a good thing....
4. Visit a music/dance performance... beautifull to see (and very complex to learn!)
