Rhine Falls and Schaffhausen

Europe’s largest waterfall (but not the highest – that comes later in the trip) might not be on a scale comparable to the world’s best known, but it’s still a hugely impressive sight all the same. Furthermore its accessibility – it can be viewed from almost every angle, mostly for free – and various options to get up close and personal make this one of the more appealing falls you’re likely to see.

Accessible from nearby Schaffhausen, it’s worth your while to take the time to see it from just about every vantage point you can. The falls are flanked by two castles – Schlossi Worth across from the base of the falls, and the larger Schloss Laufen perched above. It is from the former that boat cruises depart, where you have the option to climb up the tall rock that forks the middle of the falls and immerse yourself in the gushing water around you.

On a budget, I opted to shell out the 5 Swiss Francs for the descent from Schloss Laufen instead. The views from elsewhere are great, but here you can get very close to the raging torrent, gaining a greater appreciation of the falls’ sheer power the further down you go. Particularly mesmerising is the platform at the end, where you have the chance to stand directly above a steep gradient of rock where the water slaloms fiercely in to the river below. Don’t stare at it too long if you suffer from vertigo!

Charming little Schaffhausen is deserving of an hour or two of your time if you can spare it. Its pastel-hued town centre is sprinkled with occasional frescoes adoring the walls of buildings. The highlight for me was scaling the vineyard hill up to Munot, the castle overlooking the town and affording fine views of the ornate, terraced rooftops below, as well as the river and hills away on the horizon.

Ah, it wasn't that much of a challenge really. The other two waterfalls were a bit more demanding to see up close!
