The castle above Heidelberg.
Didn't have to get up quite so early this morning, as Heidelberg was only an hour drive from Pforzheim
. It rained all day today, but we still managed to walk around to see most things in this old university town. The Christmas Market was spread out over quite a few squares here, so covered a bit more ground. We indulged in some gluhwein and had lunch in a lovely old pub which apparently dated from about the 16th century, so quite quaint. There are not so many sights here, although the Empress Sisi used to visit here and stay at the massive castle at the top of the hill - you can't visit this at the moment, but it looks like it's being renovated so that might change in future.

We tried a Heidelberger speciality, but can't remember what it's called - it was a big ball of sponge, within which was a cream filling, and then coated with a layer of marzipan under a layer of chocolate - sehr gut!! We'd been looking for a door-knocker for our new house, and found one here - a reindeer- kitsch, but fantastic none-the-less! Also bought a couple of decorations for our Christmas tree to remember our trip with. Heidelberg is placed on the Neckar River, so we had a bit of a wander along the banks before back on the bus to our hotel for the evening. Meals were included in the package, but the hotel was obviously trying to cut costs - dinner consisted of pork and potato, and absolutely nothing else! Our driver and guide were not impressed and we think words might have been said afterwards!
