We had a wander through to look at the Abbey ruins and gardens which led to a bridge, which led to a woodland trail, which led to a signed path 'Pigeon Hole' which went quite a long way ....... before we ended up at a very deep (100 foot at a guess) pothole with steps down into it and a river at the bottom.
When we got back to the site, there was a Netherland couple just pitching who had been next to us at the Ballina site. They assured us they hadn't walked all the way but done a mixture of walking and buses. They were mainly Dutch people on our area of the site. I find it strange that they never seem to talk to each other when they meet. If I met another English speaking person when abroad, I would want to chat. When we were in Holland, we asked someone about this (Dutch person) and their theory was that they have such little space, they make their privacy by mentally shutting others out.
We explored again in the evening and found Ashford Castle. This was a lovely building on the Lough now used as a hotel but with extensive and interesting grounds open to the public. We enjoyed a good walk until it rained again.
