Edirne was the second capital of the Ottoman Empire after Bursa. Here was born Sultan Mehmet II Fatih ( the Conqueror). There are many objects from that time in the city. One of them is the Selimiye Mosque, built by Mimar Koca Sinan Aga - the greatest architect in the Ottoman Empire who served three sultans. His tomb is beside Sultan Suleyman Kanuni and Hurrem Sultan in Istanbul.

Edirne is also known as a place where Meriç river meets with rivers Tunca and Arda. The Tunca river flows into the Meriç river on the south of the town.
A beautiful stone bridge over the river Meriç was constructed in middle of the nineteenth century. There is a wonderful view from an Ottoman kiosk in the middle, built for the sultan to watch the sunset on the river. The river was the site of the Battle of Maritsa near the village of Chernomen ( today Ormenio in Greece) the Ottoman victory over Serbs in 1371.

Edirne is also famous for the Kirkpinar oil wrestling festival, that is held in June every year since 1346. It is inscribed in the UNESCO lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010.
