Uglich
June 22, 2007
Stop #1 on our cruise: Uglich, a town best known for things that happened to Ivan the Terrible's son Dmitri. After being exiled to Uglich with his mother, Dmitri died mysteriously by "slipping" on some knives and cutting his throat. Likely Boris Gudonov had him killed, but his death marked the beginning of the period of the "False Dmitris" in Russia, various pretenders to the throne after Ivan the Terrible's death. The Tsarevich was canonized and a cathedral was built on the spot where he died, the Church on St. Dmitri on the Blood.
The town was a bit more commercial than I would have liked - we only spent about an hour 1/2 there, as it is relatively small, but to get to the Kremlin you have to walk through a souvenir market, and at the end of our tour our guide made some shameless plugs for local craftsmen. Overall though, the city was quite nice.
