My Walk. Walking?

Pennsylvania Travel Blog › entry 1 of 3 › view all entries

I will be setting off - on foot - to walk and wander around the United States. I will take my time with no schedule. I may walk a year. I may never stop walking. I shall allow the powers that be to guide my journey. Fate is, afterall, the best travel guide, I think. I'd like to meet people along the way to share stories and experiences with them, as well as to learn of places to see and avoid. My Walk. Walking?

As most of you know, I am preparing for a walk around the United States. Part - a BIG part - of my preparations include researching 'walkable' routes. Whilst doing so, I often write to hostels, and the like, asking for walker friendly routes. It is NOT as easy as you would think to find walk-friendly roads. I won't even go into all the issues surrounding camping by the side of a road.

To my utter surprise - and quite frankly SHOCK - I'm getting some 'less-than-ideal' responses. Last night I recieved an email reply from someone in Florida. They stated: "Hitchiking in Florida is illegal." I kindly replied that I won't be hitchiking, I'll be walking. Then this morning I got the reply: "To limit vagrants, Florida Highway Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies, often stop and question and harass 'walkers.' Apparently, like in Florida,  on many roads in the United States, walking is frowned-upon, or outright illegal. Safety or 'less-than-desirables' are cited as reasons. Something that I hadn't considered.

To be honest, Im prepared to be stopped by polie officers and the like. I expect it isnt too often that they see a guy walk a huge backpack walking through their town, especially as Ill be taking backroads, and will walk/pass through a lot of small towns. I'm expecting to be stopped and questioned. Honestly, Im asking for it!

What hadnt occurred to me is this: I'll be a vagrant. According to Dictionary.com, a vagrant is defined three ways:

1. One who wanders from place to place without a permanent home or a means of livelihood.
2. A wanderer; a rover.
3. One who lives on the streets and constitutes a public nuisance.

I suppose, technically, I will be a vagrant. Something about that strikes me odd, strikes me not-so-nicely. But, then, I began thinking of all the other things I'll be: homeless. Unemployed. A transient. And, to some, I certainly will be 'less-than-desirable'. As I thought of these labels, I became quite bothered by them. I didnt like to be thought of as any of those things.

Then came a calming, soothing thought: Sure, I may be a transient and homeless and unemployed. Sure. But, I'll also be free. Completely free.

If you know of any roads where one can legally walk (especially roads that are long in length and connect cities to cities), please contact me, or post a comment in reply to this entry. Or, you can also visit my MySpace page (www.myspace.com/hermitouszen) for more info about the walk, and more ways to offer suggestions and advice.

I dont know how useful it would be to you but the Great Allegheny Passage ( really a paved bike trail ) might be a good route to walk.
