So ry die trein....

Thursday 9 October 1986 consisted largely of a rather strenuous train journey - 25 hours from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The journey was characterised by violent interludes of tickling, SAR pies (yech!) and a frustrated jazzman announcing dinner by means of a large, syncopated triangle. Other travellers included a becrutched grump, a World War 1 veteran (complete with pyjamas and a paisley gown), a group of adolescent schoolchildren from Worcester and a prisoner with escort.

My horizons were broadened by last week's Weekly Mail, Warwick's photos of New Zealand and SA, and life outside and on the train. Names became places and acquired new connotatios as the train yawned through Beaufort West, Laingsburg, De Aar, Hutchinson, Klerksdorp, Krugersdorp, Roodepoort, Randfontein, Florida. The anaesthesia of the Transvaal - "is there anybody out there?" - alive, I mean. Only heaps of people lining the platform - but by then it was Friday 10 October 1986.
