San Cristóbal, Venezuela - New found friends

We left Mérida pretty early just in case things didn’t turn out as we hoped.

We started out with a nice little hike out of town because we knew it would be easier catching a ride.  ’Til that point we’d opted to take night buses to our various destinations in Venezuela because the distances were very long and we were running short in time.

Heading to the border, however, was a different story.  We decided to try hitchhiking again and see how well it would work . . . good choice!

At first, it seemed a bit tough, but then things got way better!  It worked like a breeze!  We were thrilled because finally we could save a few bucks!!

And better yet, we ended up meeting this SUPER guy, by the name of Rafael, who was truly a lifesaver.

San Cristóbal, Venezuela - Avec Raphael & amis
He was a real sweetheart . . . We had plenty of time to get acquainted and even took a little break from the road to enjoy the company of a couple of his friends and some nice cold beers!  And boy, can Venezuelans drink!!

Arnaud and I were amazed at how fast they guzzled down the beers.  Each time we finished one round, they were calling for another one!! After 5 rounds we finally set off!!

It brought back memories from México . . . drinking on an empty stomach!  Imagine!!  In any case, we had a great time getting a bit tipsy at midday!

On top of that, Raphael then took his generosity a bit further . . . he arranged for us to crash at his friend’s place in town.

At first we weren’t too sure because we really needed to get going and head to the border, but then we realized, hey we got some time, so why not!?  We got the hook up too!  He dropped us off at his friend’s house and we were on our own from there.

San Cristóbal, Venezuela - Arnaud, Carlos, & Juan

Juan, his buddy and now ours too, was another lifesaver.  The generosity we experienced in this short amount of time had me blown away completely.  We were strangers, but these people took care of us better than our own friends!!

We had a GREAT time with Juan and his friends, Carlos & Joanne.  Of course, we partied it up with them, as well!  An unforgettable time!

San Cristóbal, Venezuela - Going for a ride
