New Delhi, India - Alors là, c'est un cartable !!

New Delhi, here we are!!  What a relief to have arrived here without any huge problems.  Hitchhiking continues to work out beautifully for us, so that’s wonderful.

On the other hand, our adventure in India is becoming a bit LOURD or too much, notably for mon chéri Arnaud.

Having to deal with the stares and dirty looks, whenever walking hand in hand with me, and which for many locals seems to be a no no . . .

Confused?!  Well, it’s quite simple, I’m frequently mistaken for a local, and thus the disapproving looks we got from the locals.  Mixed couples weren’t common to see . . . well, that’s the impression we got, in any case!

Constantly having to be on the defensive, and always having to negotiate to avoid being ripped off for every and anything;

The only place we could be sure that we'd be paying the set price was McD's!!!

And even there we got somewhat frustrated .

. . where's the beef?!!!!  Argh, would have to settle for chicken burgers while in India, I guess!

Yeah so, whether it be for the common everyday things like food and accommodation, or even for transport, public or hitchhiking; because even then Arnaud was the only individual that the driver would want to charge for the free ride.

Alas, it was all becoming TOO MUCH for my Arnaud!!!  :(

Anyhow, that was our reality for the time being so we just had to suck it up and deal with our situation as best we could . . . only a month to go before returning to normalcy!

Despite this bit of discomfort for my love, I still tried to stay calm in difficult moments and maintain a positive state of mind, in general.

I have to admit that India is a place that could easily drive you up the wall, and funny enough whenever one of us was irritated or frustrated by a particular inconvenience, the other one was always calm enough to manage the situation appropriately; and vice versa.

New Delhi, India - Juanny & sa copine

Perfect, exactly what was needed in unbearable instances!

In any case, here we were in India’s capital, and so obviously I was quite anxious to finally have gotten here, because we both knew how much I love big cities!!!  Really!

I’d heard that there’s so much to see and do here, so I was psyched about our visit to this diverse and culturally-rich place.

Oh yeah, but let’s not forget our little mishap with our memory cards in Agra!  If there was any place we’d be able to get our virus-infected memory cards repaired, it’d be in a capital city, right?!!

Well, believe it or not, we did have a bit of a hard time getting this resolved!  What matters, though, is that we did get this problem fixed.  Phew, what a relief!!

Long story short, we managed to find a photo shop capable of recuperating the majority of our data, but for a cost .

New Delhi, India - La Bosse à la Porte de l'Inde
. . a pricey one, at that!!

The amusing thing about the whole situation was that recuperating our pictures and videos ended up costing us pretty much the same amount of cash we were so happy about saving when passing off as a local!  :(  Karma!!!  Got us good!

Anyway, the moral to the story . . . no more little white lies or else!!  ;)

Now with that resolved we could go off and soak up all the sights around this huge vibrant city!!!  Yeah!

New Delhi is quite the bustling, multifaceted city, bearing the complexities, the contradictions, the beauty and the dynamism of a city where the past coexists with the present.

Sorry to say, though, to my unfortunate surprise, I found it to also be a sad representation of the India I had heard about and so much wanted to avoided seeing.

New Delhi, India - Juanny at the India Gate

Poverty is everywhere here, almost as if it were part of the landscape!

And it’s not like we hadn’t seen poverty before.  After all we have been traveling for nearly 15 months now, not counting our previous adventures abroad as well.

Here it struck us in a whole other way.  The wealthy just walk on by the homeless as if they were part of the scenery with little if any regard to their existence.

A truly sad and disturbing thing for me to witness first-hand.

Despite this sad observation of the country’s capital, though, the history and cultural activities to be found all about deserved visiting without any doubt.

So, upon having our memory cards repaired, and getting set up at our permanent accommodation, we were ready to take on New Delhi.

New Delhi, India - India Gate, the national monument of India commemorating the 90,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in World War I and the Afghan Wars

Yeah, regrettably, because our CS contacts were unable to host us as previously planned, we had to opt for a noisy guesthouse at the Main bazaar, Delhi’s backpacker haven.  Argh!  A very touristy area and one of those types of places we so much despise and try to avoid if we can!!

It’s unfortunate, really, because I’m sure we would have appreciated our stay a lot more had we been able to be hosted by a local CSer instead.

We could have experienced Delhi differently, and better yet, see it as the locals do.  That’s the best!  Oh well, c’est la vie!

On the bright side, as we found ourselves in the middle of the city, getting around was really easy and quite convenient.  The rickshaw drivers were just a holler away, or better yet we were in walking distance from just about everything .

New Delhi, India - J&A at the India Gate
. . well not quite.

As far as sightseeing, we took it all in, even the dirty and dusty places!  Not hard to do ‘cause that’s everywhere, pretty much!

Oh and the touts, they’re everywhere too!  And they lie. Boy do they lie.  Welcome to India!

We’d heard that there was a first rule to follow by when in India: Do not trust anyone that says anything is shut, or believe anyone who wants to take you somewhere they just happen to be walking to

This goes for most touts, especially the rickshaw drivers!!

Ok, duly noted!  Easy for us because after so many months of travel and being accustomed to this type of behavior, especially when traveling in developing countries, we were ready for them!  Bring’em on!!

And yet, although we thought of ourselves as being the best to deal with possibly the world’s worst examples of say-what-you-want-to-hear touting, at times, it did get under our skin .

New Delhi, India - View of the Amar Jawan Jyoti (the flame of the immortal soldier) & The Canopy
. . well, more under Arnaud’s!!  ;)

Luckily we got past the irritations, and were able to soak up the sights in which Delhi’s certainly not lacking!

To start off, a stop at India’s Arc de Triomphe, the soaring memorial that is the India Gate, followed by visits to the scenic deities of the Laxmi Narayan Temple aka Birla Mandir, then the breathtakingly beautiful Sikh temples, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.

We also made sure not to miss out on the not-be-missed Gandhi Smriti, the place of Mahatma Gandhi’s Martydom, as well as the Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial and spot of his cremation.

And of course, how could we not visit the extravagant Jama Masjid Mosque, the towering beauty of the Qutab Minar, and the extraordinary petal-shaped sides of the Lotus Temple.

New Delhi, India - India Gate at night

Oh and let me not forget, the sizeable Red Fort and Rajpath, with The Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, just nearby.

But our stay wasn’t just visits to the touristy attractions, we also strolled freely about Delhi’s various markets and busy neighborhoods, trying to get a moments peace while wandering around them . . . Not a chance!!  Haha!

Well actually, after a while, we did eventually get some personal space, and were able to do as the locals . . . almost!!  Pretty nice feeling to be able to sip chai at the street-side in serene calm . . . For real!!  Just huge!!

I’d even say that one of the most appreciated moments during our visit was when Arnaud and I were able to take a stroll around one of Delhi’s typical neighborhoods, sit down with the locals and just people-watch without being hounded.

New Delhi, India - Yum! Love me some Lassi (an Indian Yoghurt drink)!!

Arnaud was even able to get a nice shave, Indian-style, and better yet pay the Indian price!!  Ha, not so fast!  The barber did try to weasel more out of him, but it wasn’t happening . . . Arnaud refused to let this guy take advantage of him!

With that accomplished, we, or should I say, I was able to appreciate the charms of India’s capital . . . Arnaud, not completely!

Yeah, apparently they say that after a certain amount of time in Delhi, you get a vibe about you, and the locals start to let you be.

Poor Arnaud is still waiting for that moment to come . . . me, on the other hand, should consider myself lucky because thanks to my Indian look, have benefited from this right from the start, just about!  ;)

Ah, Delhi.  Discovering its diverse cultural elements and stunning architecture, not to mention learn more about its history was truly a fascinating and rewarding experience.

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple, aka Birla Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to Laxminarayan and built in honor of Lakshmi (Hindu goddess of wealth), and her consort Narayana (Vishnu, Preserver in the Trimurti)

Our time here was well spent; and though we would have much rather preferred being hosted by a couchsurfer, we still were able to explore this city and take in everything it had to offer us, both good and not so good.  ;)

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir), one of the major attractions of Delhi, attracting thousands of devotees on the Hindu festivals of Janmashtami and Diwali

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

New Delhi, India - The gardens of Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

New Delhi, India - Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)
