Melbourne, Australia - Melbourne's Free City Circle Tram

Well, after having spent 2 very long relaxing weeks in Yamba, you bet I was ready to get back to a city!!

We still had about a week and a half left in Australia, and we weren’t sure what to do now.

Originally we said that we were going to visit Melbourne during our stay in Australia, but then we got a bit discouraged because we kept on hearing that it was so cold down there, and so forth.

Folks just kept on saying, "Don't go there, it’s cold . . . don’t go there, there’s nothing there, it’s just a big city . . ."  So we changed our minds, and decided to remove it from our plans.

But then, being that we still had some time on our hands, we rethought it all, and decided to add it back in.

We figured, we had survived the cold before, and that a little rain wasn’t gonna put us off too much!  We’re not made of sugar, after all!!  Or are we?!!  :)

And hey, if we made it through the cold weather in Bolivia and Chile, we certainly could make it through Melbourne’s yucky weather!!  So off we went for Mexico, as it’s referred to as, by some folks from Victoria.

The journey to Melbourne couldn’t have gone better, really.  We got picked up by our very first truckie in Australia, who was heading to Sydney, and which meant getting us halfway to Victoria!!  Perfect!

Then along the way, we continued meeting some interesting people and some not so hot folks too.

Melbourne, Australia - Grafittee on Degraves Street

Yeah, unfortunately we got picked up by a couple of jerks along the way, who, personally, made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Still all their obnoxious talk about being related to the infamous Ivan Milat didn’t discourage us, and we kept on going!

After our short visit and lovely evening with our friend, Stedman, in Canberra, we were back on the road for Melbourne.

And once again, we were picked up by two very friendly and spunky ladies who were just so happening to be going to Melbourne!  Just what we were looking for!!

And the trip was certainly far from being boring.  They were incredibly entertaining and quite the talkers, so the few hours we were dreading to have to spend in a vehicle again, just flew right on by.

Melbourne, Australia - Mr. Happy!

The landscape heading down the south of Australia wasn’t as spectacular as it was when we were making our way up the coast, but you can’t have it all, right?!!

And being that we kept on passing by signs warning the presence of wombats and koalas around, I’d hoped to see some in the wild, but no luck.  Ok though, still got to see them at the sanctuary!!

As for Melbourne, it’s great!  At first glance, it was a bit intimidating because it’s such a huge city, but then at the same time, reassuring because everything seems to function just perfectly.  And it did!

There’s so much to see and do here, and culturally-speaking, Melbourne’s got it all, from museums down to its restaurant and café scene.  Just be ready for the unpredictable weather here!!

But hey, with the right clothing and an umbrella, this city’s got lots to offer, and I’m sure anyone would love it.

Melbourne, Australia - Architecture on Degraves Street
  We certainly enjoyed ourselves here!!

And the services that are provided for its visitors . . . Amazing!  It was the first time we ever experienced not having to pay for a bus that tours the city.

Melbourne offers a Tourist Shuttle AND Tram, all free and easily accessible to both, locals and tourists!!  How great is that?!!

Now, of course, this certainly helped us out a great deal, because we could simply hop on and off and visit the city’s major attractions without worrying about anything.  Just like that!

Sure, walking around the city could be nice too, and we did do some of that, but hey, if free transport was available to us to avoid having to do that . . . then why not!!

So, whether you’re looking for culture, history, gastronomy, or people, Melbourne’s definitely a great place to find any and all these!!

Oh and let me not forget making a special shout-out to our Couchsurfing contact, Mark, who was kind enough to host during our stay in lovely Melbourne!!  Thank you buddy!

Melbourne, Australia - Juanny on Degraves Street

Melbourne, Australia - Degraves Street, Hell's Upstairs has the stuff you want!!!

Melbourne, Australia - Flinder's Street Railway Station
