Kunming, China

Kunming, China - Arnaud & Juanita at Jinmabiji Square

After a bumpy night on the sleeper bus, we finally reached Kunming, right on schedule.  We got in quite early, at around 7am.

Now, here's where things would get interesting . . . finding our hostel, but better yet, finding someone who could tell us how to get there . . . and in English!!!

As soon as we stepped out of the station, we immediately knew it was gonna be a challenge.

No culture shock was felt; however, I must admit, that for the first time in 12 months of travel, I felt the frustration coming, and hard!!

Everywhere we turned, there was a non-English-speaking Chinese .

. . silly me, we are, in China afterall!!!

Shame on me! There goes the American in me coming out . . . automatically expecting everyone to speak English, even in a foreign land!!  NO!!  That's not how it works!!

So, I'd just have to deal with it, and hope that my nerves and frustrations wouldn't get the best of me!!  Calm, just stay cool!!

And good thing we did, because eventually we did manage to find someone, who spoke English, and who, most importantly was able to direct us to our destination.

Phew!!

Anyway, upon arrival at our hostal, first things first, find out what's the best way to get to Beijing!!

Our original plan was to stay the night in Kunming, and then continue onward the following day.  That would soon have to be reconsidered once we found out that there was a cheap train ticket available directly to our destination.

So, our choice was . . . waste money and time at this hostel, or save money on accomodation, by taking the night train to Beijing.

The best and cheapest choice was quite obvious for us, although we really didn't realize what was in store for us!!

Anyway, the decision was made, so we'd be riding the night train to Beijing!!  No sleeper, this time!!  Hard seats are all we'd have!! :( Oh well, when money's tight, gotta make some sacrifices, right!!??

Otherwise, the short amount of time we spent in Kunming was ok, I guess.

Considering it was pouring down the entire time we were there, it was hard to really appreciate the stroll around the city.  And since time was limited, we could only stick to visiting nearby sites, that's all.

Still, we had a nice time here, quite relaxing, really.  Exactly what we needed, especially mental relaxation, in preparation for our 38-hour train ride to Beijing!!  It was going to be an interesting adventure!

So, Zai Jian for now, and see you in Beijing!!
