Granada, Nicaragua
Now in Granada, a pretty colonial town, just near Lake Nicaragua. And strangely enough, looks a lot like Antigua Guatemala, but a la Nica! Yet there is one difference, the landscape. Things to do here . . . check out the lake and also get a glimpse of all the tiny "isletas" nearby. Another neat spot that's not too far from here is the Laguna de Apoyo, which is actually the result of a volcanic explosion that took place many many years ago, and which is now a tourist hotspot.
But as usual, nothing is free . . . what a surprise!!! To visit this place, there's an entrance fee!! Still, we wanted to get a view of this crater that's now filled with fresh water. Another crazy thing about this lagoon is the fact that it's 500 meters deep, and also the home of all sorts of fishies.
Who knows how they got there because it's completely closed off, with no sort of entry for any bodies of water. Hmmm?!So, getting in . . . a bit problematic. Instead of getting discouraged, we decided to figure out how to go about getting in without paying!! And we did! Because we weren't sure how to go about getting there, we decided to take the bus to Masaya and then hike the rest of the way to the lagoon. When we got there, we came upon a small little pathway which led to the lagoon; so we nicely asked this little old lady, who was also the owner of the property, if it was ok to pass on by. And she kindly replied, "Si, no hay problema"!! And voila, that's how we avoided paying the entrance fees!!
Definitely one of the nicer areas in Nicaragua, and happy that we decided to visit this part of the country.
