Chichicastenango, Guatemala
October 12, 2007
Pretty hard to say, but very lovely to see! This cute tiny town, unfortunately has been invaded by tourists, non-stop, so consequently has taken away from its authenticity a bit. The people seem friendly, but at the same time a little stand-offish too. What I found to be interesting here were all the colors all around. Not only was the architecture colorful, the people and their clothing were as well.
All around, you could see tiny women in their traditional wear, selling fruit, making homemade tortillas, or just walking about. But beware, if you start looking to buy something, a swarm of ladies will come around trying to sell you an article at “tourist” prices. So get ready to bargain because the prices will start high. Oh yeah, and if you wanna take a picture of the locals, be prepared to pay because they charge!!! No joke!
Oh and let’s not forget all the little shoeshine boys coming around telling you that your shoes are dirty, so that they can shine them at a “special price”.

Chichi, itself, was pleasant. We got a chance to see a Mayan ritual taking place at the Templo de Santo Tomás, and visit the market, that’s usually visited when one comes here, as well. Bad thing was it almost seemed staged. Oh well, nice time though.
